Probably the largest '42 gathering to take place outside of Hanover and the Balsams was September 10 at the home of Jane and President Dave Heald Planned to coincide with the College's Leadership Weekend for class and club officers, it was a combination meeting/parly. First on the agenda was the plans committee for the 60th (!) Reunion, chaired Jack Corwith, there with Millie. Others were Guy Swenson Pat and Art Henderson, Gerry and Bob Searles Shirley and Dick Burns, and Wally Farr. That was followed by a general '42 class plans commettee led by Dave, with Ginia and Hunt Allison, Kathie and Buzz Cassidy Carolmae and Bob Enchermanl . Lois and Frank Faroulo Mary and Bob Kirk, and me.

You'll note that it tallies to 23 classmates and wives. There was (surprise!) a cocktail hour after the meetings and then the gracious cious Healds served a lobster dinner for all. It was a memorable event, with a lot accomplished.

Jane and Dave Sargent have permanently moved from Wellesley Hills, Mass., to their retreat in Norwich, Vt., which they have improved so they can handle the Vermont winters with ease. Dave reports things are fine, but he regrets not being able to play tennis and bike ride anymore; he retired in 1989. He said once his proudest achievement was raising and educating six children, all of whom are self-supporting.

Paul Vaitses was awarded the April Hometown Hero Award in Fall River, Mass., along with a local doctor, for their work in saving the Central Congregational Church from being demolished. The award was presented by the president and CEO of the Fall River Five Cents Savings Bank at the former church, which is now the home of the International Institute of Culinary Arts and the Abbey Grill. Paul had, for more than 20 years, been involved with the preservation vation of the U.S.S. Massachusetts as executive v.p. of its memorial committee, from which he retired in 1990. Paul has a long history of good civic works as well. He was in elective politics (serving as mayor of the City of Melrose in the 19605, for example), and in investment banking up to 1970. He and Maxine now live in Swansea, Mass.

Since my last column, when I reported 18 deaths since our 1997 reunion, I have been informed of four more. Our condolences on behalf of the class to Margaret Schuette whose Bob died July 29 of brain cancer; to Clair McLean, for the loss of Robert on June 9; to Sarah Crane whose Edward died June 29; and to the family of ElmerHansen, who died June 7. Further details will be in the obituaries which will appear in the magazine at a later date.
