Maynard "Bud" Riley reported by phone from the Chicago area that he was alive and well and still playing tennis. _ He also continues his aid to a sailing program for the handicapped, taking such folks out for a sail on Lake Michigan. Bud also participates in a yearly ski trip with Chick Weisker, Spif Little, and Pat Riley '42 (no relation). Bud reported that he keeps in touch with Bob Fry, who is in decent health in the Philadelphia area.
Another happy fella, Jake Gidney, answered the phone in Reno, Nev., still enthused about the magical women's soccer team that won the World Cup for the United States this summer. Jake, a lifelong follower of the sport, interviewed an outstanding female soccer player interested in attending Dartmouth. Despite his recommendation she was finally rejected, but will be coming to Hanover in a red Cornell jersey. Jake reminisced about our freshman days in Hitchcock Hall and wondered where Al Edmunds was. Sadly, the College doesn't have an address for him.
Talked to Jan Watson, Win's better half, in New Canaan, Conn. (60 Myanos Road, 06804), in August and learned that Win's physical health was good, but his strokes of November 1998 and January 1999 have affected his speaking ability. This professional writer and the pride of Prof. Sidney Cox's writing courses has also lost the ability to read or write. It's a tough time for the Watsons but Win was gladdened recently when he presented his Phi Beta Kappa key to his granddaughter as she graduated from Wesleyan with that honor.
Jim Eckels in Salt Lake City sounded loud and clear on the phone, or five-byfive, as we Signal Corps communicators would say in WW 11. Jim and Ellen are moving to a condo in Riverton, Utah, where Jim will be able to enjoy the bike trails and Ellen will be happy to live on one floor. Jim's bike was a present from Ellen on his 80th birthday. Maybe she's telling him to slow down a little from his routine of roller-blading two miles twice a week for the past six years. Jim keeps busy in other ways, continuing to sing in the Episcopal choir for the past SO years.
Cheers and good health to all.
