Palmer Beasley, M.D., dean of the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center School of Public Health, has received the 1999 Prince Mahidol Award for medicine for his outstanding work on the hepatitis B virus. Queen Sirikit of Thailand presented the honor in the Throne Hall of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The annual prize is presented by the foundation of the Thai royal family upon the recommendation of an international panel of experts. The president of UT-Houston noted it was a tremendous honor: "Few, if any, medical professionals in the world have done more to prevent cancer than Palmer Beasley." Ted Harris passed through Hanover, and we had a brief visit while chasing some trout. Ted was en route to Marthas Vineyard for a two-month sabbatical, where he will be doing an anthology of The Pharos, the quarterly of Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. Ted is the executive secretary of the group and editor of the publication.
Ray Robbins also was in town for a couple of weeks at his condo, and we had a chance to catch up at the doubleheader with Harvard, which the Green swept. Ray has retired from heading the Swiss Semester program in Zermatt, but he and Lenita continue to live there. Other faithful fans at the baseball games were Dave Cassidy and Whit Marchand. Dave and Corrine live just around the corner from our condo, so we see them quite a bit on walks in the area. Whit and Stephanie have recently completed a new house in Quechee, Vermont. Dave Morgan has retired from Ingersoll Rand and is working twice as hard in the wild world of real estate in northern Westchester. He and Jean still live in North Salem after 37 years. Butch Pendergast and Jackie split their time between their cabin on Lake Hook in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Culebra Island, where they built a house three years ago. They have now bought another house from which he operates a boat rental business, and you can look him up at www.vacationspot.com. Norm Sylvester writes that his old roommate, Larry Schwartz, was married on June 18 to Maria Collier, "...an executive recruiter and terrific lady." Norm says: "Between Larry's new boat, his new golden retriever and new wife he is pretty busy and still gainfully employed." The Sylvesters are constructing a new home at the Quechee Club in Vermont. They hope to finish in September and have a roof over their heads in time for the fall mini-reunion.
Speaking of that event, it is time to make plans and reservations for the weekend of October 27-29. The parade, bonfire and reception will be on Friday, and Saturday will be the class meeting, pre-game tailgating at Dave Bradley's law offices, the Harvard Game and the reception and dinner at the Alden Inn in Lyme, New Hampshire. Joe Jacquet has reserved the inn for the class on those dates. You can make your reservations by calling (603) 795-2222. Be certain to tell them you are with the class of '58. Look for details in the mail soon.
