The editor of the Alumni Magazine is working on a cover story for the January /February 2002 issue that will focus on Dartmouth's "special places." Through a collection of anecdotes and reminiscences by alumni, faculty and students, he hopes to document the sense of place that the college has long enjoyed in the hearts and minds of its graduates, asking that we tell him what our favorite spots were—and why! With this in mind, maybe I could devote my Jan-Feb column to our/your special spots. It is possible that some of your submissions could be included in the cover story—so, please, give this thought and send me your anecdotes and places. I need them by October 1,2001.
I regret having to report the deaths of Roy "Tiger" Chamberlin, who passed away on January 22; Charlie Silvernail on March 14; and Dana Lowell on April 7.
Again I have help from my counterpart of the Dartmouth Medical School magazine, Dwight Parkinson. He writes of a telephone call to John Godfrey to learn that his wife Jean, has had four hip replacements and two knee replacements. She gets around briskly with a walker. John is enjoying perfect well-being but, through a regular check-up, has been diagnosed with a lymphoma of a type yet to be determined but hoped to be benign. Dwight included a picture of John playing touch football and throwing a pass to George Zeleff. The caption reads: "Even at recess' we were all in jackets and ties!"
I recently came across a picture of Hanover s Main Street in the mid-1930s, showing the sign from Saias Restaurant and across the street the restaurant run by George Gitsis, where the Dartmouth Bookstore is now located. Do you remember? I can also see Allen's Drug Store. Those were the days!
Bob MacGregor, a Hartford, Connecticut, native, has just made his annual trek to his summer home in Brewster on Cape Cod. Morgan Marshall has just returned from a three-week stay in a hospital recovering from an infection from a recent operation. He and his wife, Tindy, are now living in Hyde Hill in the State of Washington and enjoying it! They now have four children and six grandchildren.
You should be reading this is mid or late August. So, give reunion serious thought. May we see you there!
My best.
