First, a correction to an earlier column in this magazine, in which I failed to report that Bill Steel is now co-chairman of reunions with Vic Schneider.
Summer doldrums reduced the flow of news from classmates, so Ma Bell had to rescue this correspondent. Chuck Stanley reported from Yarmouth Port on the Cape that he was suffering the post-op pains ofkidney stone and prostate surgery. Fortunately, his grown children are nearby to furnish assistance. Three of his sons worked in Chucks homebuilding company before they moved out on their own. Chuck suffered the loss of his wife of 58 years about three years ago when Joan died of brain cancer.
Jim Vaughan, a long-time resident of St. Paul, Minnesota, reported by phone that he was well despite a circulation problem in his leg. After three years of sea duty aboard the carrier USS Franklin, Jim settled in the Midwest and began a 35-year career in the paper industry. He credits Bob Faegre'39, an Alpha Delt fraternity brother, with starting him in that field.
I caught Bill Paddocks wife, Betty, on the phone. After WW service in the Army Signal Corps and then earning an M.B.A. at Columbia University, Bill began a long career in investments. He and Betty worked together in their advisory company in Rochester, New York, until they finally closed the doors in July 2002. That may be a class record for the longest business career.
Lee Cone answered the telephone in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where he and Ellie continue to do good Christian works. Beginning in the late 19505. Lee left the secular world of commerce and became a divinity student in Wenham, Massachusetts. He stayed at Gordon College in a management capacity for 27 years, ending with his retirement in 1987. Since moving to New Hampshire Ellie and Lee have devoted themselves to helping senior citizens in a nursing home and at the First Congregational Church in Center Ossipee.
Bill Galbraith and his wife, Ruth, are enjoying their new surroundings in a retirement community in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He doesn't miss commuting from Long Island to Manhattan, which he did for 32 years while working as a merchandise buyer for JCPenney. Bill keeps active on the Crooked Creek Golf Course and compares the Carolina mountains favorably to the White Mountains.
Y'all stay well and keep the faith.
