"The class of 74 must be unemployed: Remember the old saying, "Write if you get work"? Well, nobody's sent me even the tiniest missive. Following up with the death of Miguel Angel Cardona, here are some excerpts from the Star-Ledger of Newark, New Jersey. "Mr. Cardona, who died Tuesday at home, was self-employed as a corporate human resources consultant. Previously, he was the director of external affairs for the St. Louis, Missouri-based INROADS Inc., a national career development organization which provides corporate internships to minority college students. In 1984 he founded the Newark-based INROADS affiliate. Before joining INROADS, Mr. Cardona was an assistant director of admissions at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, and the regional director of admissions and student affairs with A Better Chance, New York City. He was also an ordained Baptist minister."
There is a new service that you should be aware of: the Dartmouth Digital Library for Alumni, a service that will provide you with access to online information and resources that have previously only been available to current, enrolled students. The digital library provides access to high-quality online information from a wide variety of sources, including business and consumer magazines, trade journals, academic and scientific journals, local and regional newspapers and U.S. and international newswires. It will be the first time we have provided online commercial content to alumni outside the library's walls. Sign on to www.northernlight.com/dartmouth. Searching is free, but viewing of commercial content is only available to alumni who register at the site.
The Digital Library for Alumni offers the ability to search and read articles from a breadth of information resources drawn from business and trade periodicals, academic and scientific journals and hundreds of local and regional newspapers. This online collection ranges from The New York Times, Fortune and The Economist, to stories from the Associate Press wire service and ABC News transcripts. An additional 360 million Web pages combine to create a powerful research database. The service is provided free-of-charge to Dartmouth alumni, thanks in part to the generous support of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library. "As a full-time writer, I've been using the Web as a research tool since its inception, including a fair number of premium sites," said Ed Gray '67, Tu'71. "The Digital Library for Alumni is such a valuable addition for me that I've now made it my home page. Thanks!" A major strength of this online library is the innovative search technology, which searches full text publications and the Web simultaneously. Helpful features offered at this site include: "News Headlines," which gives you the big picture at a glance or searches the current news database of more than 60 domestic and international newswires, all updated every two minutes; "Special Editions," which highlights a variety of hot topics and presents links to relevant articles and Web sites in a convenient, timely way; "Search Alerts," which keeps you up-to-date with ease. E-mail alerts will notify you when there are new Web pages or Special Collection documents covering the topics of your choice. From the e-mail you can effortlessly launch a results list with that new information. There are also "help" pages to guide you in making the most of this exciting new service.
