Word has just come through concerning the passing of Howie Nopper, a year ago, on August 30, 2001, and John Jacobson, on April 27, 2000. We are sorry to be so late in our reporting these sad facts, but it is not always possible to receive the news in a more timely manner.

Ted Wolfe writes us a Green Card in which he states: "I have lost Betty, my partner of 64 years, which is quite an adjustment for me. Last August I had open-heart surgery, with the insertion of a new valve, a repaired valve, a large vein replacement and for an encore, they installed a new pacemaker." Ted is living year-round at 6432 Plantation Road, Spring Hill, FL 34606.

Bette Timbers writes about her annual lunches with Doris and Jim Corner, who faithfully drop by each winter during their brief stay in Florida. She ends her note by saying, "Keep sending me the '39 Out."

We had a nice Green Card note from Ev Woodman, from which we quote: "Early June always reminds me of D-Day, but also of Kashmir, where we vacationed during our 10 years in India, where the trouble still bubbles. Why this country has always tilted toward Pakistan still mystifies me. We have muffed our relationship most of the time ever since partition. My memory fades so I quote from Farewell to Winterline by Stanley Brush, 'So much has changed in India over the past 73 years that the period before and during WWII, its disturbances, dislocations and precipitous end of British rule seem like scenes in a distant drama, ever receding over the horizon of living memory. The details are obscure, the colors have faded, the sounds are barely audible. As the generations of those who were there leave the stage, the details go with it and are lost forever.'" Evends his comments by suggesting that we should "grow old with our class, but stay young with our College." This is advice that he himself pursues, living on the edge of the campus of Colby Sawyer College, of which he was president.
