Since our last column we have lost Ward Porter, who passed on April 11; Pem Pleasants died on June 15; Hank Glovsky passed away on July 7; and Jerry Beatty died on July 31. (Obits follow in this issue.) The old mailbagis pretty nearly empty, and I must confess, after being your secretary for some 39 or 40 years without a break, it's not getting any easier to fill a column. One way to provoke some mail is to be as inefficient as I. There is a case on the books whereby I sent Les Graves two birthday greetings. He had this to say: "I always knew that a persons 85th birthday was a major milestone but didn't realize that it would warrant two class birthday greetings. The first, in which you apologized for being late, arrived well before my festive,"and the second one arrived right on time. For both of them I was most appreciative."
Ev Woodman recently unearthed a lovely set of 12 Dartmouth College dinner plates from a barrel in his attic. Never used, and in perfect shape, the appraiser stated that they were produced in the latter part of the 19th century or earlier years of the 20th. The Dartmouth scenes that decorate these plates makes them very desirable. So Ruthie and Ev presented them to President and Mrs. Wright at their residence on July 31. They were delighted with the gift, since the residence apparently doesn't have any such dinner ware.
Moreau Brown reports he is disappointed in his present living situation and is looking to move. If memory serves, the Browns had only recently moved to some senior quarters in San Francisco.
The Valley Courier published a story of a selectman this past spring which featured the mayor of Essex, Connecticut. He is none other than Peter Webster '71, the youngest son of the late Bill Webster. Like his dad, Pete is an avid skier and kayaker who coached our the first U.S. Olympic team. It would appear from the article that, politically, Pete could hold down his job as long as he wanted, though he says he believes in term limits.
Merry Christmas and a happy '03 to all!
