Em Day sent me a copy of an article that appeared in The Boston Globe and that was sent to him by Ann Kneisel, widow of our classmate, Junie, that has Boston and Dartmouth '34 interest. Bill Reid wrote a book about Castle Island, and the Eighth Fort in 1851 was a Pentagon by Colonel Sylvanus Thayer. That last name has to be the same Thayer that our school of engineer- ing is named after. The deans office told Em that there is a book in the Baker Library, The Beginningsof the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. By a strange coincidence, the Orsenigo Cos. manufactured furniture for a building in West Point named Thayer about 40-odd years agocould be and likely is, the same Thayer.
Got a call from Shorty Thomas, who told us that he has signed up for another year of teaching at age 92. He also said he would be unable to attend our 70 th reunion next year if it was held in September. Just yesterday I was advised by Em that the date has been changed to October 8 and 9, the weekend of the Yale football game. Hope you can make it, Shorty. We will begin to develop plans for our 70th during our next mini, September 19 and 20. We will be staying at the Lodge—rooms are double occupancy, private bath. Our headquarters room is at the Hanover Inn. The College is picking up the tab for dorm lodging and class meals.
