Observance of Memorial Day this year brought to mind the names and faces of many classmates who made the supreme sacrifice in WW II. It is often noted that the class of 1941 lost more men than any other Dartmouth class. Telephone chats with a few of the living '41s shared my sense of loss as we recalled fallen men of Dartmouth. Don Hagen and wife Jane both claimed good health thanks to their genes and the leisurely life of Sparrow Bush, New York. Don is retired from the telephone company and he keeps in shape mowing his beautiful grass, a plot of 1.5 acres, which surrounds his grandparents homestead. Don also wields a mean axe when it's time to split the firewood. Ed Stone up in Wakefield, Massachusetts, had a dizzy spell in mid-May, which required a stent be placed in an artery. He now resumes working most every day with his three horses that he hopes to race at Suffolk Downs. Ed requested one of the horses be officially named Unc Richardson after Stoney's high school classmate. The request was approved by the Jockey Club in mid-May. Ossie Mills and wife Margaret reported from Chesterfield, Ohio, that Os had broken his hip nine months ago and he is still convalescing. So hang in there, Os. Frank Boutin returned my call from Odessa, Texas, where he and June have lived for many years. Frankie worked in a family business selling electronic parts until 1983. Now he is content to play golf in the low 80s but wishes he could copy his hero, little Ben Hogan.
