Eighty-eight men of Dartmouth, wives and friends of the College gathered at the Saturn Club on January 31 for the annual dinner. As in the past this was a co-ed affair, an arrangement which apparently pleases the majority of the members, and was a most enjoyable occasion. Space limitations prohibit a listing of all the names, but among the couples seen at the cocktail party preceding the dinner were: Alice and HughJohnson '30, Jean and Bill Donaldson '37,Kay and George Selkirk '39, Grace and PaulVenneman '26, Lucy and John Cogswell '31, Alice and Bob Common '40, Eleanor andJack Guenther '41, Rosemary and Jack Marlette '46 and Norma and Ed Marlette 41. Retiring President Les Lambert '21 received an Indian Yell for a job well done. Treasurer Lew Harriman Jr. '38 likewise received an enthusiastic ovation after reporting club finances in the black for the first time in years. The new administration is also on record as being opposed to further deficit financing.
Coach Tuss McLaughry, the principal speaker, reviewed the more interesting highlights of last fall. The reasons for his great popularity with the coaching fraternity and members of the Big Green squad were readily apparent to all who met and talked with him. Tuss, being a modest man, mentioned that a team's success was due roughly 20% to the coaching and 80% to material.
The freshman team won one game in 1948 —none last fall. Quite frankly we are all somewhat responsible for this record. The coaching staff can't continue to face a major schedule with airy degree of success unless we help. Our Western New York Club is one of the largest Dartmouth alumni organizations and yet you all know how very few representatives we have had on the squad the past few years. I would appreciate hearing from all alumni interested in this subject and would particularly like to learn if there are members who know the coaches and principals of the high schools in the community in which they live. Are there any ex-football players or other alumni who would give up enough time to watch a high school ball game occasionally? It is probably too late to do anything regarding admission to next year's freshman class, but we can get a program started now for future years if this idea appeals to you. As your secretary, I would be willing to try and coordinate these extra-curricular activities.
The club is sorry to learn of the death of John Bartlett '11 and extends its sympathy to members of the family.
