Earlier this- year we mentioned that BuckEwing was on Formosa in a military advisory capacity. During the summer a letter was received from Buck, and for one settled in a fairly routine pattern of living here in the States, I found it very refreshing, and so mayyou: "As you see from the letterhead, we are technical advisors only. This group are all ex-service men who are hired through Commerce International China by the Chinese Gov't to assist the Armed Service of Free China in getting all their equipment in good shape and maintaining it. I've been out here ten months and finally I'm beginning to see the results of our efforts. My job is getting the vehicles of the services in shape; organizing Driver School; maintenance shops; and teaching the troops in the field to take care of what they have.
"We see some strange things done. I've seen vehicles operating which shouldn't move. As an example, the other day I saw a truck with a banana leaf wrapped around the main lead from the coil. I asked what in heaven's sake the leaf was for. The driver started the engine then removed the leaf. The engine died. The lead was shorting out and the banana leaf was a good insulator. We saw an Ml rifle which had an enlarged bore due to the many thousands of rounds which had been shot through it. The Chinese had heated the barrel, put a steel rod of exactly 30 calibers into it and then pounded the barrel down to 30 calibers. I'll admit the barrel looked like the devil but I fired a clip through it at two hundred yards and I could cover the pattern with the palm of my hand. Before they shrunk the barrel the bullets were keyholing at one hundred yards. We have seen heavy machine gun barrels welded together and firing O.K.
"There is a strong rumor that the US Army is sending over a large Military Mission. That will wind up our job here. I'll either go back on active duty with that Mission or stay out here and go into some business. This island is really the most beautiful spot in the world. The Portuguese named it correctly. Formosa means beautiful in their language.
