You'll excuse a leisurely pace in this month's writings; you see, I'm sitting under a palm tree beside a cool swimming pool in Savannah, Ga. Ah yes, nothing like the "fat" life—thank you I'll have another bourbon and water.
It had been my plan to write this as a parody of an Inventory Tax Form, but the grim reality of the insidious thing drove the thought away.
Unsolicited, but most enjoyable, are your recent letters. One addressed: Greetings from Western New York, signed by Carl Schoelles, reads, and I quote:
"I haven't had the opportunity to write since I last wrote to Phil Stedfast and a lot has happened since then. For one thing I now have another daughter born November 16 and that makes two for me. As you can see I'm still in business for myself and unless taxes and other restrictions get worse than they are I'll probably stay here for some time. (Carl is in the bottled gas business in Sanborn, N. Y.) I've tried several times lately to get to the meetings of the club in Buffalo but each time something has come up which demanded my presence elsewhere. Perhaps one of these days I'll get there.
"I'm taking my annual leave of the business to spend a month in Winter Park, Fla., where my parents are residing. Incidentally, that town has more Dartmouth alumni for its size than any other I know of, and they are all active members. It is always a pleasure to spend time there.
"I'd certainly enjoy hearing from Len Schiff or Joe Schacter and if they will send their addresses to me I will call them the next time I get into New York. And if any of the fellows are in this vicinity there is always a welcome mat out at our home on 33 Pearl Street in this village."
Edie McClintock, John's wife, writes a swell letter with news of their young one-year-old boy Chip (John Jr.) looking like one of the boys with a "beer gut" in his Dartmouth shirt. John and Edie are enjoying a rugged winter in Excelsior, Minn., with a four-foot toboggan and good hills. Get that picture of big John on that miniature barrel stave sled. Thanks, Edie, for the nice letter. From Korea, that Cleveland gentleman, Doctor, ist Lt.,Jim Jones writes with a picture enclosed, that he has seen no '46s but that Major Cliff Baldwin '43 and Captain Howard Sawyer '45 are in his outfit. Jim was a resident surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital from June, 1949, until he entered the Army Medical Corps in July, 1951. He's been in Korea since September. Jim married Mary Lou Strimple in June, 1948. They have a one-year-old little man, Douglas Guy Jones. Ann Vallely (Mrs. Tiger) writes great news about another "tiger cub" John Franklin Vallely born December 31, 1951. The lair now totals two boys and one "tigerette." Thanks, Ann, for your note and we sure hope to talk Hose and Jean Weld into another weekend at Great Chebeague Island for the famous 20-minute picnic.
Charlie Duncan, Rick Shambroom and I have been enjoying pretty regular lunches together. From conversations comes news of Jim Pert, who has a residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He and Charlie are getting in a little tennis when the season is on. Max Pryor is in Chicago, that's all we know. Norm Weissman is living in Westport, Conn., doing free-lance writing. Ed Woolman is with Hale & Hunter, a grain trading house in Chicago. Charlie showed us his young barrister's office with Judge Rosenman's firm and, believe me, he's living well. Roger Lock-head made front page (New York News), playing Dr. Kildaire with the Bellevue Disaster Unit at the Thanksgiving Grand Central train wreck.
"Monsieur" Robert Poet is now a District Representative for GE's Electrical Chemical Division in Chicago. He and family are living in Park Forest, Ill. Nice going, Bob. JohnDuncklee is a teacher at Leb High in Lebanon, N. H. It's good to see some right kind of Dartmouth influence going into this famous town.
Ralph Dennis is practicing law in Muncie, Ind., and just got elected Judge of the City Court. Ralph, I'll forward a parking ticket for "fixing." Ralph married Ginny Harter in June, 1949, and they have a little gal, Nancy Jo, one year and a half. Don Hols-worth has been back in the Navy since October 8 on the DDE Rich. Charlie Bodley is still overseas, has been since January, 1951, and is a supply officer at Kobe, Japan. He Was in Korea with the Ist Marine Division until October. His wife Pat says they will settle down in the San Fernando Valley in their new home when he returns. The Bodleys have two daughters, Karen, 3½, and Nancy, 6 months. Bill Soule is a first lieuten- ant in the Air Force Medical Corps stationed at Westover Field. His family is with him and he is able to continue practicing his specialty, obstetrics. Hmm, when I re-read that it seems unusual.
Recent visitors at the Hanover Inn were the Jack Whitmans and Dean Kutchera.
Three engagements have come to my attention. A Smith girl, Lea Morton, is going to marry Dr. Melvin F. Johnson Jr., who is stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., as a Lieutenant in the USNR, MC. Melvin graduated from Tulane Medical School and when called to service was a resident at Charity Hospital, New Orleans, La. Leonard I. Swett is engaged to Barbara Hendler of New Haven. Leonard is now attending the University of Connecticut School of Law. The couple plan a June wedding. This spring will find BobMartin taking as his bride Elizabeth Rippey of Chuckatuck, Va. Betty is a secretary on the White House staff. Bob graduated from Columbia Law School and is an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern district of New York. December 30 in Westfield, N. J., Archibald Gernert, USNR, married Judith Hunter. For the time being the Gernerts will call Virginia Beach home.
Excuse me whilst I take a brief swim.
