After many years as a newspaperman in Lowell and Lawrence, Mass., Jack McKallagat has switched, and become a special agent for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company, with offices in Lawrence. Jack brings to his new job a lot of things which should help an insurance man, including legal training, counter-intelligence background with the 86th Infantry and a tremendous acquaintance in his community. When Lawrence needs extra yardage on their Infantile Paralysis, Cancer and Community Fund Drives, they feed the ball to Jack and he's never failed to score. Currently he is president of the Dartmouth Club of Greater Lawrence.
At a '36 luncheon recently we tricked TedDearborn into telling us of the arrival last summer of his second daughter, Connie. You'd think these proud pops would be a little less reserved. Henceforth, all new fathers will please arrange to send the secretary a formal arrival notice Got a tip that Ed Avery is living in Deerfield, Ill., and commutes to Chicago where he is vice president of the Waltham Grinding Wheel Company. ... Those of you in the market for a rare book or two, drop a line to Hank Brewer at 241 Midland Ave., Montclair, N. J. It might be he'd have just what you're looking for — or could get it, being in the business.
The Textron crowd continues to make TedWhitmore one of the better customers of the moving lines here and abroad. Ted is back from Textron of Puerto Rico and situated in St. Louis with the F. Burkhart Mfg. Co., a Textron division. This all being third hand info, can't tell you what Burkhart makes or how Ted helps 'em make it.
Glad to see that the Class has started to give consideration to the matter of our Memorial Fund gift at the time of our 25th reunion. Al Gibney, Fund Chairman, is an idea factory himself but, as he wrote in December, he's anxious to get as many thoughts and ideas on the subject as you are willing to send him. So far so good, Al reports. His letter has brought suggestions and yes, even some green stuff! Remember, no formal drive is on until after our 20th, but that doesn't preclude some thinking and some doing before then on anyone's part.
Tufts College has made a wise choice in Len Mead as Dean of the Graduate School. We chatted with the Dean and he admits to a pretty mad schedule. He continues to be Chairman of the Psychology Department and Coordinator of Research. The latter operation has been keeping him on the fly due to the government contracts that go to Tufts.
The highly successful southern regional conference in Atlanta was reported and illustrated in the January issue of the ALUMNIMAGAZINE. We appreciate the contribution made to this meeting by Von Oehmig and Bill Shaw, who attended from '36. Incidentally, Bill lives in Nashville and toils for General Retail Corporation; outside of golf at which we assume you still excel, Von, what's doin' in good ol' Columbus, Georgia?
"I have been as silent as one of those new vacuum cleaners," is the way Norb Hofman opens up a welcome note. He goes on to say: "Want to let you know that '36 finally got together at the Dartmouth Club after a long lapse. On Tuesday, December 8, the '36 dinner drew a small but enthusiastic crowd: AllenPhipps, Jack Morrison, Gil Balkam, ArtToan, Ed Jacobson, Blake Hughes, GeorgeConklin, John Sawyer, Dick Dorrance and yours truly. Over a very pleasant meal we discussed everything from memories of '36 to McCarthyism. After a very pleasant evening we resolved that for the next get-together we would try to draw a larger turnout." To which we add Amen.
We gather from a newsy Christmas card from George McCleary to the effect that he is hung by high prices and faint heart. Seems Mac bought a plot, dug a cellar and decided to build a modern rancho overlooking the ocean. He sold his home in Noroton, but got to thinking about the bad news his contractor kept feeding him. Result: the McClearys are waiting for prices to come down in a rented abode in Rowayton, Conn. It's a fact, gang, George's rental is on Memory Lane!
Lest we have to piece together the entire column from memory of the good old days, please have a baby, or somethin'.
