There's nothing like a brisk week or two in the wintry Nor'East to revive ones vitality. Having experienced same, your recorder herewith attacks the pile of literature accumulated over the holidays.
Rog Dolliver forwarded a long note from Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Tex., where he is with the Air Force Security Service. Since graduation, Rog has been busy continuing his education and serving his Air Force tour. After leaving Dartmouth in '55 Rog, Glen Wathen, Tom Conner, and Sky Huntoon toured the U.S. on a three-month sojourn that has already been mentioned in this column. Rog then entered the University of California and spent two years there working toward his doctorate. He now possesses teaching and administrative credentials, and a Master's Degree in Education Administration and hopes to continue working toward his Doctor's Degree after returning to civilian life. Before his assignment to Goodfellow, Rog was an instructor in the Aviation Cadet Pre-Flight program at Lackland AFB in San Antonio.
Other news found its way to my cluttered desk, this time penned by Dick Meurer. Dick's employed as Assistant to the Terminal Trainmaster for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad at Birmingham, Ala. At present, Dick is training operators for a new 8.5 million dollar automatic freight classification yard there. Dick recently heard from Al Alvarez who was, at the time, back in Cuba "working for the government." As of January 1, it would seem that Al's most recent occupation is open for conjecture. Dick also sends word that Blake Irons is soon due to close out his Army career at the Opama Ordnance Depot in Japan and return to civilian life.
Bob Leopold has decided to make Uncle Sam his permanent employer and remain in Navy blue. Bob's home port is Norfolk, Va., where his family is located. (This "family," by the way, now includes David Reeves Leopold born last November 29.) Bob just completed a three-month cruise off the coast of Africa, stopping in 18 different ports during the 14 weeks at sea. Most of the trip was spent traversing the west coast from Dakar to Capetown, cruising up the east coast to Kenya province, and then retracing the course. Bob found the continent relatively void of Dartmouth men; however, he did run into Jon Moore '54 and his wife Kate at Monrovia, Liberia.
Carl Wisenfeld recently completed a six-month Army tour and has settled with his family in Roselle, N. J. Carl is a fledgling lawyer, having graduated from Columbia Law School last June.
Bill Wilbur is now Mr. Wilbur once more, after suffering the rigors of an 18-month tour of duty with the Army in France. Bill is employed by Colgate-Palmolive as an Assistant Product Manager and is living in New York City.
Jody and Mary Matthewson (with Number One Son, Kent) are stationed at Norfolk with the Navy. Jody's an engineering officer on a destroyer, and has about six more months to go. When his tour is up next August, Jody and his family will head for New York City where he'll be working with the Wall Street Journal, Inc.
Jack Porvaznik writes that he's an interne at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in the general surgical program. Jack and wife Eunice boast one heir, John William, born on November 15.
Steve Little and his wife Frances are located in Phoenix, Ariz., where Steve is enrolled in the June '59 class of the American Institute of Foreign Trade. Steve is specializing in France and the Far East, and Frances, a Radcliffe graduate, is taking advantage of the opportunity to study the languages and customs of the country they plan to settle in.
Bob Brown is engaged to Patricia Jeanne Crawford of New York City. Pat graduated from the University of Southern California in 1955. Helen Gagnon and Fred Ceres were married this January. Fred is with the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, having completed a four-year tour of duty with the Air Force. Helen is a native of Manchester, employed by the Household Finance Company there.
Bill Hochman became engaged to Michele Gilman, a Simmons College alumna. Bill recently graduated from Harvard Law School and is now serving with the Army.
Jack Palmer and Ann Dobson were engaged during the Christmas holidays, and plan to marry next summer. Jack will graduate from Stanford Medical School in 1960. Ann attended Mills College and will graduate from the Stanford School of Nursing next March.
Word comes from China concerning Doug Archibald's most recent adventures (China, Me., that is). Doug's enrolled at the University of Michigan studying English literature on a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship.
Neal Allen and Joan Wheaton were engaged this past December. Joan is a graduate of Mary Hitchcock and is on the staff at New York Hospital. Neal completed his Navy tour recently and is now with the N.Y. Trust Company. Larry Hagar is now employed by the Rapid Service Press in Boston and is going through the training program there.
That's about the extent of the news for this month. Keep writing, hear? So long for now.
