Starting with recent events and going backward, several hardy souls (including Margaret and myself) exercised rare judgment in not using our tickets to the Harvard game, played in blustery, cold rain most of the time. But a few couples had a very pleasant time as guests of Alma and Pete Wheatley for cocktails and a buffet supper in their lovely Abington (Mass.) home. In addition to the four above named, Lois and Brad Hersey (the womenfolk were also college-mates: Mt. Holyoke, '27), Harriet and Butts Lamson, Barbara and Ford Bowman (and a Harvard couple as their guests), Sarah and the Luitweiler, Marion andTillie Lourie, Theresa and Parker Hicks, Marjorie and Red Hopkins, the Nat Ryders, and the Red Maloneys. A very pleasant evening, despite the weather, and made especially so by the long-absent faces — whom we hope to see more frequently now they know how good these fall parties are.

As might be expected, there was some expression of difference of opinion regarding the 35th reunion in June being held at any time other than the commencement weekend. This has been explained before and we are fully committed to the later date. Many of us feel strongly one way or another, but - like the settlement of differences after a bitter political battle - now it's time to work to make the reunion what it can be and surely will be - the very best ever. And the 30th showed the pattern: a good family party, with something for everyone to enjoy, whatever his or her tastes - and that includes the children and grandchildren.

I won't mention this again for some time; I promise. But our only hope of having adequate motel accommodations for next fall is to get busy now. I have one motel reserved and am sure we ought to have at least one more for our needs. Your move: write me your wishes; no deposit needed. It will be the Brown game, October 10. Specify Friday night and Saturday night (2), or either one. Also indicate your intention to join in the dinner Saturday night after the game. Details come later.

Travelling is pleasant when one can see long-absent faces, and so I had hoped to see Dick Countryman, busy internal medicine practitioner, when I talked to a small alumni group in Rockford, Ill., on October 21. But had to be content with a phone call; Dick was hung up at the hospital. I was there for talks to advertising groups in Chicago and Rockford, — an annual flight from my ivory tower here in Hanover. Perhaps I'll have better luck elsewhere on other such trips this winter.

Wish I dared repeat all the details appearing on the publicity for Pete Wheatley's candidacy for the office of District Attorney of Plymouth County (Mass.). But let it be said, in general terms, that he is a hard worker in business and community activities as well as a respected political leader. It is gratifying, and true, to know that we have many others in our class with similarly distinguished records of public service.

And one final bow to the many whose response to the College's needs for a strong future is reflected in the rolls of generous givers, at whatever level their strengths and feelings dictate. Read their names in "The Capital D" publicity. If I may paint the moral, in sharp contrast to opposite rationalizations and even cynicism, the French put it clearly and briefly: "noblesse oblige."
