When hurricane "Donna" passed over Florida on September 10 she did considerable damage to the properties of some of our number. Gil Swett wrote that no harm was done to his house at Sarasota, "but she sure raised hell with our trees and plantings." It is understood that Sumner Emerson's report is much the same. The Leon Cones, at Indialantic, rode out "Donna" without any serious damage. However, they did move off the beach area and stayed in Melbourne Saturday night, but returned to their home on Sunday.

Islamorada, where Norm McCulloch's lovely winter home is located, took a real beating. Writing about it, Norm said in part as follows,

Islamorada was twenty miles north of the "eye" and we are told that gusts up to 200 m.p.h. raged through there that awful night. As you know, our place was on the Florida Bay side of _ Upper Matecumbe Key, and in general, that, being the lee side, had the least damage. The Islander Motel where the Scotts stayed was flattened, with some walls - some roofs intact, but the interiors were gutted. The Olney Inn where,/ we all went for dinner one night stood, but hundreds of their beautiful grove of trees were uprooted. From all reports, it was an unbelievably horrible experience for all who were there. We lost at least one third of our lovely tropical trees and shrubs. We were apparently down wind from a trailer camp, as along with a mess of debris, assorted refrigerators, furniture, and the like, we had three wrecks of trailers on the place. The stench of rotting food and what have you was terrific. It took a contractor with power saw, bull dozer, truck, and a gang of seven laborers a week to remove the mess of junk and downed trees. However, with the house, boat house, and boat still intact, we are thankful, and will be back for the winter. The last hurricane there was in 1935, and we have had three bad ones here in Rhode Island since then. We also have the doubtful distinction of having "Donna" whack us once in Florida and also here in Rhode Island.

As of today, the following have accepted invitations to serve on our 45th reunion committee: Bill Sewall, Chairman (as previously announced), Bob Boynton, Bill Eaton, Norm McCulloch and Helen Brooks, the latter as chairman of the women's committee. Vic Smith, as Class Treasurer, is an ex officio member of the committee. The names of others agreeing to serve on the committee will be announced from time to time.

Friday Bean reports that he is still with the U.S. Geological Survey as Assistant to the Chief, Plans and Production Section, Atlantic Area. When he returned his questionnaire he tersely stated that during the past year he has, "Started coin collection, have not been broke since. Climbed to a fire lookout tower in New Hampshire, just to prove to myself that I still could. Still enjoying life at work and otherwise. Had a new grandson, making fourteen to date. No more expected. Just returned from my annual fall foliage visit to New England."

Ray Wain reports that after retiring from Woodward and Lothrop, Washington, D. C., for whom he had been managing their Pentagon store, and moving to Bradenton, Fla., he became connected with Montgomery Roberts of Bradenton, and is now installing a unit stock control system for them.

In the October column it was reported that Fran and Mott Brown had gone to the West Coast, but details of their trip were lacking. Mott has since written that they had a very enjoyable month, going west by rail through the Canadian Rockies, south the length of California, and home via the Grand Canyon, combining business with pleasure. The high spot of the trip was a stopover in San Francisco for a week-long visit with daughter Eleanor and her doctor husband, Ed Shev. Another high spot in the lives of the Browns this past year was the arrival on February 10 of a son in the household of Barbara and Carl Holekamp '42.

Ed Wiesman returned his questionnaire and on it he printed in great big letters the word "Retired." He added that he has been elected a member of the General Council Presbytery of Washington City for a three-year term.

On September 21 Ralph Sanborn spoke before members and friends of the Wolfeboro (N. H.) Historical Society on the newly appointed State Historical Commission of which Ralph is chairman.

Rey Reycroft, who has been retired for a bit over a year, writes that, "Just really love this retirement - no pressure and rush trips - find plenty to do." Rey reported a good visit with Howie and Dorothy Stockwell at Waterford, Mel, the first part of September.

October seems a bit early to be extending holiday greetings, but as these notes are due in Hanover early in November, Helen and I take this last opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The writer was extremely sorry to hear that both Ev and Ethel Robie suffered coronary occlusions during recent months. Ev is back at work teaching, and it is sincerely hoped that both he and Ethel will be greatly improved by the time this column appears.

After telling about the wonderful summer he had at his camp at Lake Wassookeag, Dexter, Me., Monk Wells made an observation which might well be taken seriously by those who have not paid their Class dues. Writing to Vic Smith, Monk said, "Hope you reach 75% this year in paid up dues. Those of us left ought to be happy to be lucky enough to carry the whole load."

Almon Bushnell writes that he has retired from the position he held for the past five years as Supervisor of Student Teaching, Teachers College, Castleton, Vt., and is now Supervisor of Music for the Public Schools of Proctor, Vt. Bush expressed the wish that some of his old friends and classmates would drop in at his cottage at the edge of the woods, a mile from Lake Bomoseen. His new address is Lake Road, Bomoseen, Vt.

From Fred Goodwin comes word that he has retired after thirty years in advertising art and photography for agencies and advertisers in New York and Philadelphia. He recently spent three months in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in his own words, spent his time "watching life go by! An interested but passive bystander."
