As 1962 came to a close, I decided to take another look at what news had gone out on the 728 famous, or at least active, men who at some time or another were members of the class of '56. A year ago Will Sogg and I made and circulated a list of 101 we had heard nothing from, or about, for a couple of years. Only 26 of these now remain to be heard from; and Wha-Who-Whisper and this column have, since the fall of 1960, said something about 590 of our class. We will try to distribute a list of some of the remaining in a few weeks.

Bob Mackay in Geneva, Switzerland, made the Cleveland Press and News a few weeks ago in an article quoted in part below:
The quiet little man with the button-down collar and New England twang squirted mustard on the juicy hot dog with the deftness of a pastry chef squeezing out fancy icing designs on a wedding cake.
"We only wanted to make money and have fun with our favorite sport," he said. ... "All of a sudden we wind up in the middle of a sociological upheaval. I feel like Robespierre."
Robert S. Mackay, Dartmouth '56, was discussing bowling in Europe. The 27-year-old native of Nashua, N. H., is vice president of Overseas Bowling Corp.
"For instance, we were told European women would never bowl, especially in Germany," pointed out Mackay quaffing a pallid orange drink. "They said the Europeans considered such sports for men only - and women belonged in the home, anyway. That's old hat. More than 30% of the games rolled on our lanes are by European women who had never bowled before.
"We've been tremendously successful," continued the former Air Force lieutenant, ordering another hot dog and glass of liquid from the sidewalk dispenser of indigestion, "because the so-called middle class is becoming bigger and more prosperous in Europe and bowling is within reach of almost everybody.
"Bowling's helping to break down social barriers, too. Very often in Germany you'll see a hired hand rolling on the next lane to his Herr Direktor; I don't say they play together - yet - but they're in the same place, paying the same price and getting the same service, which would have been unheard of a few years ago."
Overseas Bowling operates now in Munich and Basel, Switzerland.
That's it for now. I plan to leave early tomorrow for four days of skiing including two at the Dartmouth Ski-Way; then back to the books on Monday.
