On Monday evening February 3 our class executive meeting was held at the Dartmouth Club here in New York and was very well attended. We had cocktails while listening to Reg Bankhart '35 discuss the 25-year giving program which we have to start thinking about now for our 25th Reunion is only eight years away. Our bequest chairman Dick Greene has already spent much time on the subject but many worthwhile thoughts were proposed around the table. Those attending the meeting and dinner were Russ Carlson, our chairman, Bob Russell, John Hatheway, Bob Arnold, Bob Tracy, Joe Smith, Dick Greene, and myself.
The second subject on the agenda was the imminent 50th Annual Alumni Fund Drive. Bob Tracy had completed a detailed analysis of past years' contributions in an effort to revitalize the giving habits of those who have not given in the past few years. Last year our dollar total was not too bad, although it certainly could stand some improvement, but the number of contributors' percentage was terrible. This year with Bob's complete geographic breakdown and organization of agents we should really break all '48 records.
After having been, with Crown Zellerbach for many years, the last two here in New York, John Woods, whom some of you will remember as the third Hanover High skier who lived on the top floor of Richardson along with Drue and Colin Stewart, has moved to Rochester, N. Y. John became an executive with the Genesee Broadcasting Corporation, radio station WHAM, and lives in nearby Honeoye Falls where Barbara and the two kids are finally getting settled. I'm sure they get to Hanover once in awhile to visit John's parents who live out on Balch Hill.
Nat Merrill was again praised this sea- son for his restaging of a well-known opera, this time Aida. In case you might not remember, Nat is now stage manager of the Metropolitan Opera. As stage manager of the Met Nat has supervised the presentation of a dozen performances in established versions of various operas during the regular season. Next season he has been commissioned to create a new concept of another favorite opera the title of which is still a secret. We will be looking for the news releases on this one in about a year.
At the recent annual meeting of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers Association in Boston, Autty Knight was elected president of the organization. Autty is president of the Samuel Knight and Sons Lumber Company of Beverly. The Knight family, comprised of Autty, Nancy, and their four daughters (things don't look so good for the lacrosse team in the years to come!) live in Beverly.
The book which Bob Huke wrote part of and edited the rest while in the Philippines during the past year was recently published in the Islands. The title of the book is "Shadows on the Land: An Economic Geography of the Philippines." During the last year Bob was Fulbright Professor of geography at the University of the Philippines and travelled widely in the Islands. He is now back in Hanover where he is associate professor of geography.
Last fall John Warwick spoke to a group in New Rochelle about his field, the advertising business. John is vice president of the prominent Manhattan agency, Warwick and Legler. John and his wife live in New York City.
At the end of last year, Peter Swinscoe moved from Washington, D. C., to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he became director of the Marine Operations Division of Hofman and Pitcairn Inc., a designing firm. I'm sure Pete will enjoy living in sunny Florida.
Ray Richard has again moved back to the East after living in Chicago for a couple of years. He is now living in Branford, Conn., not too far from New Haven.
Another of our classmates working overseas is Dave Walsh. Dave had been in the Philippines with CARE organization and now is living in Ankara, Turkey. Dave and Cynthia have three children.
His last transfer finds Comdr. Dave Richards living in Cherry Hill, N. J., being moved from Louisville, Ky.
As always the Alumni Fund is extremely important to Dartmouth so I certainly hope all of us do our part this year remembering we have been out of college long enough now so that we must start to assume a heavier share of the load than we have in the past.
Incidentally, I'd like to mention that after working for fourteen years at Goldman, Sachs and Company where I started soon after our graduation from Dartmouth, I recently joined a dynamic young firm in the same field, investment banking and brokerage, Andresen and Company, where I have become a partner. It is exciting to become a part of a growing organization such as this and I am eagerly anticipating the challenge involved in my activities in the sales and new business areas.
See you next month!
