Pursuing a most interesting career with the Peace Corps in Venezuela is John Seely who is a member of the first Peace Corps group teaching at a Latin American University. Officially, John is an English instructor at the University of Oriente campus, located in Ciudad Bolivar, an Orinco River port; however, his teaching experience goes far beyond his classes as he instructs classes for the public in the evening, participates in the city's English clubs and helps classes at the commercial and technical schools. According to an article in "Overseas" which John wrote:
In the evening classes we have used the classroom as an instrument for cutting across whatever class lines may exist, bringing people together from all social strata without discrimination. We have used the classroom as a medium in which to elucidate issues and expand the outlook of our students. ... Our house, conveniently located on the campus, is always open to students. At various times, it has been a center for classical record sessions, chess tournaments, heated political debates, and ebullient fiestas to which students and the public are invited.
In facing the overwhelming problems of a new university and a society in the process of transition, we found a broad and unlimited role open to us. Although our position as English teachers has limits, our classes have provided an opportunity for undertaking a more comprehensive program. We have concerned ourselves less with the number of hours we are teaching than with the impact we are having on the society, with the exchange of ideas, and possibly with the arrival of mutual understanding.
