Although this past summer seemed shorter than ever, it still managed to bring about many changes for members of our class. It also saw the first New York Metropolitan area class dinner. Under the leadership of Don Bigham and Ed Boyer, it was a great success and will undoubtedly become an annual affair. I didn't count heads, but believe there were close to 50 classmates attending, many of them with their wives. Through the efforts of Bob Douglass, we had Congressman John Lindsay as the guest speaker. We also had Bob Henderson from Boston and Dick Blum from Cleveland who were both in town on business at the time. Dick showed me an article from the Cleveland Plain Dealer telling about Tom Wilson. It was a write-up of the Cleveland Yacht Club's 87th Midsummer Regatta stating that among the boats capsizing was Tom Wilson's Waterloo. It went on to say that Tom was able to right the boat and sail across the finish line. It didn't say how much later.
Dick also told me that Larry Barnett was back in the country for a six-week cram course at Honeywell in Wellesley Hills. When Larry returns to Europe he will be moving from Italy to London where he will become European Director of Administration and Planning for Honeywell's Electronic Data Processing operations. If my memory serves me correctly, this is the third move for Larry in Europe in the last couple of years. I just had a postcard from Jack Patten who is also in London, as European Manager of McGraw-Hill. Jack evidently is finding time to try some of the better known golf courses in the area.
Another postcard from Al Stover says that he ran into Jim Oberlander in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jim has left the Crocker Citizens Bank and has opened his own real estate office in Santa Barbara. There were numerous other changes in the business world reported this summer. Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. of Chicago announced that Bob Callender has been elected second vice president. Bob represents Continental's Commercial Banking Department in New York City. The Warner & Swasey Company announced the appointment of Bill (William S.) Smith to the post of district manager of their Chicago-Denver territory. Bill has been with Warner & Swasey since graduation in 1953. He has served as branch manager in charge of sales and service. Dave Halloran has been named vice president for marketing of Aerolab Development Company. He will manage a new marketing headquarters in Washington, D. C. He was previously with Douglas Aircraft Company.
In the world of education, Rudi Haerle spent the summer working on a Columbia University experimental project to develop a curriculum in sociology for secondary schools. Rudi is an instructor in sociology at Middlebury College where he has been since 1962. Howard Koonce has been appointed administrative assistant to the President of Colby College. He has been an instructor of English there for the past two years.
No doubt dozens of babies were added to our roster these past few weeks. Some of them include Ann Margaret to Dick andEdie Blum, Susan Chapin to John and ElenaKingsland, and Peter Jr. to the Peter Reichs. Real estate must be booming in California since Pete has also gone into the business. After many years with Simpson Paper Company, he has joined the firm of Le Roy D. Owen Co.
Marriages are much rarer at this point, but I do have one to report. Roger Cole married the former Linda Jean Lippert in Beverly, Mass., last May 29. Linda is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts.
Unfortunately all of our news is not of a happy nature. We are very sad to report the death of two wives of classmates. Our deepest sympathies go to John Monahan and Tom Bagg for their tragic losses.
Cliff Rusch resigned as assistant town manager of West Hartford to accept a post as assistant city manager of Alexandria, Va. Dick Lombard was named campaign chairman for the Rye, N. Y., United Fund's annual fund raising drive. Dick is a trustee of United Hospital and Bennett College in addition to his job as vice president of Lombard, Vitalis and Paganucci, Inc., a member firm of the New York Stock Exchange. Wally Bass will lead one of the two divisions in the New Haven United Fund-Red Cross campaign organization. Wally is employed in the marketing department of the Southern New England Telephone Company and lives in Wallingford.
It would be inappropriate to end this column without mentioning the results of this year's Alumni Fund campaign. Our class regained its spot on top in the Green Derby (Classes of 1951-1957) by a substantial margin. We were first in all categories including number of contributors, dollars given and percentage of objective. Ed Condit and all of his agents deserve a great deal of credit as do all of our Class who gave so generously. Evidently the other classes recognize our able leadership since Ed has been elected president of the Dartmouth College Class Agents Association.
We hope to have a full schedule of parties following many of the football games this fall. Notices will be sent and I hope to see you at one or more of the games.
