Philadelphia papers reported not one polio case in Pennsylvania 1964; two nonfatal cases in lersey. Same story everywhere. For one man's role in conquering this crippler read the biography of Basil O'Connor '12 (uncle of Dan O'Connor) in 1912's Fifty Year Book. But for O'Connor, it states, there would have been no 1954 Salk vaccine trial.

Christmas mail brought greetings from many classmates including a kind word or two about the column. Time hasn't softened Ernie Sauls, head cattle auctioneer in Norfolk, Nebr., who postcards, "Donovan, you're just as dull as ever." My pal. Lil Meleney wished me "Happy Truck Leasing in 1965." I'll need that. ... So the new year starts with numerous firm resolutions — some already broken.

There's one classmate who's really off to a new career in 1965 — Jim EHeman, our first bank president. Jim capped a brilliant career with the very large Chemical Bank New York Trust Company in his appointment as president and chief executive officer of the Trust Company of Morris County, Morristown, N. J. Jim had extensive W. War II Navy duty in three major amphibious landings at Anzio, Normandy, and Okinawa, where he commanded a destroyer escort. He attended the University of Cincinnati's Law School and worked with the Aluminum Co. of America before following his father's career in banking. Then followed fourteen years in all phases of banking with the Chemical, rising to vice president. In Morristown Jim is a member of the board Morristown YMCA, the Dartmouth Alumni Council, Board of Governors of the Dartmouth Club of Morris-Essex Counties, director Kapp Records'; Inc. and the Calbrian Company, Inc. Shirley and the three children probably tore up Jim's commuting tickets, for Jim will no longer grab that 7:10 for that ninety-minute ride to Wall Street. Life should be easier at 110 Springbrook Road, Morris Township, N. J., for all the Ellemans. Congratulations, Jim, from all of us.

Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia has an excellent Monday luncheon at the Poor Richard Club. Good food and fellowship. No '43s present at the meeting I made, but the trip was worth it hearing the repartee between Gen. Paul '16, former Eisenhower aide, and Dick Lippmann '42 in their respective roles winning W. War II. . . . Wonderful hearing from CDR. T. R. O'Neil '50, Navy instrument flying expert and carrier night fighter pilot, who completed a Dartmouth education in short order after having heard an old shipmate say often how valuable a Dartmouth education is. Navy is lucky to have this O'Neil in its organization. . . . Memo to class secretary, 1955: Bruce Bergquist is married to the former Betsy Smith of Montclair; their children are Sally, Berit, and Bruce (Sam) Jr. Bruce told me you didn't know about his marriage. Nice couple like this shouldn't go unrecognized. Bruce teaches English at The Hill School, plays a fair game of golf, and is regularly beaten by Betsy, who plays a better game.

Martin Kane, new resident of Portland, Me., suggests to George Barlow, eminent Trenton jurist, that Dick Kimmel could throw light on that Hanover Inn robbery situation. Something about the loot's presence in a dormitory attributable to the Camel's rubbing a certain lamp. Martin is more than a bit puzzled by the success of Fran Murphy '44 in medicine, George Barlow in law, Dick Kimmel in business, and the Democrats in Maine.

Stan Calder's new address in New York makes it easier for him in his sales activity with Baker, Weeks and Co., investment bankers. He'll spend his free time in Jersey. . . . The New England Society of Newspaper Editors elected Tom Gerber to a three-year term on the board of governors. Group is currently quite concerned over the problems of pre-trial publicity and publicity durthe trial. Philadelphia Bar Association is also hot on the subject. ... The Adams School Planning Committee, deep in the initiation of a regional school system in Adams, Mass., includes Dixie Daniels as a member. The Dixie, Marine veteran, is vice president and treasurer L. L. Brown Paper Co., member Republican Town Committee, the Adams Chamber of Commerce, past president Adams Lions Club, and active in many community drives. Remember how Dixie used to wear his ballcap when he was taking two and hitting to right back in the days of Jeff Tesreau? Dixie was a good ballplayer.

Kelly Coffin does a splendid job on "The Clanging Bells." I think it's the best written class newsletter coming out of Hanover. . . . Certainly would like to hear from or about Bill Wierman, Bob Straub, Jim Olson, Kirkie Lallande, Don Jones, Joaquin Vallarino,Johnny Wynne, or any or all of the other 386 class contributors to the 1964 Alumni Fund. When you're paying your income tax this year, just think how much more you could have given to the College instead of paying it as tax.

This pre-Yale game reunion photo shows(l to r) Bob Garvie '43 and three '44's:Don Lindell, Ralsey Scofield, and JohnEnglehorn at a New Haven-type "picnic."
