Harry Lewis, who is chief operating officer of BoettcHer and Co. in Denver, was recently elected to the board of directors of the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange. Stanley Bergman, a New Haven Attorney/CPA specializing in taxation, was recently named to the University of Hartford Tax Institute. Two more '55s achieving high rank as volunteers in public service. In view of the large group of our classmates giving their time and efforts in the public interest I must conclude that the Great Issues course struck home. One more tribute to the leadership of John Dickey.
Soon to be Navy Captain Bob Leopold has been very active "as the Navy's only travelling snake oil salesman." He gives presentations on the importance of sea power and the growing Soviet naval strength. He hopes to move soon to a job where he "can provide a significant input to cutting waste and inefficiency from our bureaucracy."
Since this is the next-to-last article I will prepare for this column it's time to reflect on the last six years. By far the high point of that period was watching the POW's returning from Vietnam on TV and seeing the profile of Huck Wilson getting off the airplane. The football weekend when he and Adlyn came to Hanover was a very wonderful occasion for all of us.
Each year the Class was very strongly represented in all facets of Dartmouth alumni affairs. We made great strides in improving our performance in the Green Derby competition which pits several classes against each other for the Alumni Fund. Pete Thompson deserves a great deal of credit for his leadership in this effort-
Thanks to a great job of collecting dues by John Demas we were able to provide meaningful financial support to DCAC and ABC. Both organizations truly appreciate this and give us a lot of credit for assisting their programs.
"Johnny Dell" provided some really funny class newsletters despite a plethora of class modesty. Incidentally this writer experienced the same problem. Hopefully now that we're all past 40 we'll lose our youthful bashfulness and the next administration won't have to worry about it.
Sonny Peters provided the leadership for all this activity and deserves a lot of credit for his efforts. It's very difficult to get a good turnout of the class executive committee when they come from all over the country.
The hardest job of any secretary is to write the columns which go on the pages marked "Obituaries." Fortunately this was not necessary very often, but that's no solace to the loved ones of those about whom I had to write. Once again I would like to express the sympathy and understanding of all the Class to the wives, children, and parents of John Leaver, Morgan McGuire, Ross Schumacher, Bill Spalding, and Al Wright. A book has been donated to Baker Library by the Class on behalf of each man.
It's been an interesting and enjoyable task keeping up with the varied and impressive accomplishments of our class. In summing it all up it seems fair to say that, while we don't have any President, Senators or Congressmen, we do have a hard-working, honest, capable, diverse and humble group of people who are enriching society out of all proportion to our numbers. I'm very proud to be part of it. Keep smiling, give generously to the Alumni Fund and come to Reunion. See you there.
