Ace Hall called the other day to ask for GlennWilson's address. In the course of our conversation I learned that he is now reporting directly to Transportation Secretary Brinegar and is deeply involved in a study of the eastern railroads. As most of you know this is a very important problem, the solution of which will demand the highest level of thinking and political skill. I can't imagine a better person for the job than Ace.
There have been several other requests for Glenn's address. I therefore wrote him recently seeking his permission to publish it. He granted it in a wonderful note, parts of which I quote. "I would like you to express my heartfelt gratitude for the concern that the Class of'55 has shown for the well being of my family and myself these past years. I really appreciate everything you have done to make things a little easier for Adlyn and the children." Then he added two sentences which seem to illustrate the dilemna of all returning prisoners. "It is really great to be back. My face hurts from smiling so much." His address is Major Glenn Wilson, 236-50-8956, c/o Homecoming Project Office, Wilford Hall USAF Center, Lackland AFB Texas, 78236.
One of Scott Gerrish's Dartmouth friends, Ken Davis, in Derry, N.H., very thoughtfully sent me news of Scott's election as selectman. I'm not exactly sure what a selectman does but I think it must be akin to a mayor. Anyway Scotty had two opponents making a vigorous campaign necessary. "He attended dozens of coffee hours making known his feelings on the town manager plan which he favors and which was approved by the voters. He also favors creation of a housing authority and is strong on town planning." As he used to do as a baseball catcher, Scotty won going away in what Ken described as a "humdinger campaign." Congratulations Scott, I hope that you elect to run for the Congress in your next outing.
Tom Hughson joined his father in 1958 as partner in an Oneonta, N.Y., insurance agency. The firm has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and is thriving. Tom has earned several distinctions including election to the Regional Agents Advisory Board of the Utica Mutual Insurance Company and the Kemper Insurance President's Club. The agency handles all insurance lines and has the full facilities of 33 insurance companies available to it. Long live the small businessman! Good work and best wishes for continued success, Tom.
One of my fellow history majors has achieved real distinction in his field. John Cavanagh has been appointed chairman of the history department at Suffolk University in Boston. John has served at Suffolk for three years. Previously he was a mamber of the faculties at the U. of Tennessee and Duke. John, I'm sure Al Foley, John Adams, and Lew Stilwell are as proud of you as your classmates are.
Buck Kuttner was recently sworn in as Essex County Park Commissioner. Since my bride's family has lived in that county for longer than she can remember we are familiar with the area. Among its other achievements, it truly does have an outstanding park system. It boasts a fine skating rink, a children's zoo, extensive walking trails with superb views of Manhattan, etc. Buck has been entrusted with a very important public responsibility which I know he will carry out with distinction.
The 1973 Alumni Fund is off to a good start. Our class has already reached almost 1/3 of its goal by virtue of early gifts. You will receive an appeal from one of Pete Thompson's agents soon. Please surprise him by telling him that you have already mailed your generous contribution.
You're all doing interesting things. How about writing to me so they can be shared with your classmates? Make that your July 4 resolution.
