June and I wish all of you and yours the merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years!
We had a wonderful cruise of the Greek Islands in October. Sorry not to have been able to see your relatives, Nick Xanthaky, but I never did master the alphabet so had no idea of how to look them up. It is a beautiful spot to visit.
My chief informer, our genial treasurer EdBrown, has sent me some more notes from classmates on the back of our class dues statements.
Ed Bishop wrote as follows: "Instead of retiring as planned on June 1, I am chairing (thankfully on a short term basis) the department of obstetrics and gynecology at University of North Carolina. Probably better this way," I'm sure it is better for North Carolina, Ed, but don't work too hard - retirement is not all that bad, you know,
Nelson Mc Clsary said he had no news, "just the same old golf rut. Summer golf in Constable, N.Y., and February and March in Plan on being at the Cornell game in 3 box high up near the free coffee." He also included a picture of the officials who participated in the North Elba Town Flail dedication, and there was jack Shea, township supers visor, helping to snip the ribbon. . (See the January-February 1978 issue.) Thanks, Mac,
Chuck Hirschy wrote, "I retired several years ago and now spend most of my time hunting and fishing or playing contract bridge when not involved in community activities. Our winter address is Apt, 301, the Cay, Key Colony Beach, Fla. 33049, which is adjacent to Marathon in the Keys." Hope we can see you this winter, Chuck,
Gordon Kibbe says he has been retired for two years: "Keep busy by being active on boards of the visiting nurse association and the library in Springfield, Mass. Also am church treasurer and treasurer of Kiwanis. Play a little golf and tend a small vegetable garden. Get away in March to Siesta Key in Sarasota."
Ed Marceau. dentist In Burlington, Vt., wrote, "For the past five years I have taken one of our children to football game in Hanover. Yesterday it was our youngest, Marcy's, turn and we really enjoyed the whole scene and pecially the 10-3 victory over the Yalies. There were a lot of dimly familiar faces around us but none that I could stamp with a name, How about turning out a rain hat, or ear muffs, or a nose warmer with '34 stamped on it?" From what I heard about the weather, all three items would have been most welcome, I'd.
Bob Offenbach puts us retirees to shame by writing, "Sorry for those who have retired, Hope to work until I'm 85, Keeps me young and out of trouble' Still holding forth at Management Recruiters when not playing bridge or golf. Sorry that 'Helene has had additional strokes and is now in a nursing home. Hope to see you at reunion." We're so sorry to hear about Helene, Bob, but are tickled to hear that you will be at reunion.
Charles Steffey had a sad note on the reverse of his dues bill, and I quote: "My wife Margaret died in May of this year of stroke and heart attack. So I sold my house and am moving to an ocean condo in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. New address starting November 1 is 4225 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna, Fla, 32069," I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, Charley, but I do hope you will enjoy your new quarters.
Ollie Sergent deserves the medal for trying hard to get his two Yale tickets to Ed Brown in time for someone to use them. Here is what he wrote: "Kay and I had expected to see you and Barbara and the reun-ers last Friday, but the doctor decided that he wanted her to stay close by until he had made, some more general tests. Finding it too late to catch Xanthaky or Bodman, I sent my two Yale tickets up Friday noon via Annisquam near neighbor, Ed Roewer '44, with the hope that he could give them to members of '34 via you. Unfortunately, he was having to lay over in Concord, N.H., until Saturday forenoon.
"That forenoon, Kay and 1. still at the seashore cottage (where the rain on the roof did not stop by game time) received a direct report from daughter Nancy, that she had just presented us with our first grandchild. It was five years ago and one week since her wedding on the porch of the same cottage on a sunny day." You really tried hard, Ollie, and the news of the grandchild was wonderful, and the Yale defeat must have made you and Kay very happy.
Had a newsy letter from Bill Emerson and one from pres Frank Heath, which I'll review next issue,
Hope 1979 will be great and that you are at reunion June 11!
