Hello from our Florida hideaway. Sure was glad to get away from one of the coldest winters Chicago has had.
Back to the drawing board — had a fine letter from Jerry Danzig. He is with Chester Burger & Company, Inc., which specializes in management studies of corporate public relations departments, their organization, budgeting, and operations. Jerry will be doing exactly what he had been doing in the governor's office and so will fit right in like a glove. Thanks for the letter, and the best of luck, Jerry.
The Mad Nomad, Bud Yallalee, was in NYC in December and chatted with Bill Sherman, telling him he was bound for Florida and that "he who travels without dogs, cats, or brats," was taking a two-legged female passenger in February. Bill said, "That's good — she can share expenses," and Bud's reply was, "She'll provide entertainment without a cover charge." Tsk, tsk — for shame, Bud.
Nice letter from Harry Wallace, thanking me for the publicity in the November column and adding two new items. They have a new grandson, Benjamin, born to Dick '70 and Linda, and he has been enrolled in the Class of '97. Item two said that Harry is retiring from Hathaway after 30 wonderful years. He and Kay will stay in Riverside but will have more frequent trips to Bermuda (and more pictures, I hope, Harry). Thanks for your note.
George and Gisele Collins have a new address. One Harbourside Drive, Apt. 108, Del Ray Beach, Fla. 33444.
Bob Naramore sent me a news clipping about the retirement of Bill Ely last June. Bill, headmaster of Fairfield Country Day school for 24 years, has been in the education field for 40 years. Mr. James Gilles, president of the school's board of trustees, praised Bill for "taking Fairfield Country Day School to a high rank among elementary schools." Congratulations, Bill. (Bill also sent his new address from November 1 to May 1: 202 Sunrise Drive, Bahama House South, Key Biscayne, Fla. 33149. He says he will be almost next door to Jake Edwards. Hope you guys get together.)
Gardner Brown by chance attended the dinner honoring Dr. Frank Lepreau Jr., who wrote to Ed Brown a most unassuming letter that I will share. "I had supper a few nights ago at a local Polish restaurant with Gardner Brown, who came out of retirement to be chief executive officer of the B.M.C. Durfee Trust Company in Fall River while they are looking for a permanent officer. Sincerely, Frank." Some modesty, Frank, since the supper you had together was to honor you!!!
Paul Ebbitt wrote asking for information about his roommate, William P. Stowe. This may help you, Paul, since the address I have differs from the one you have been writing to. I show Bill living at Box 872, Brevard, N.C. 28712.
Ed Marceau says his daughter Michollo is a freshman at Dartmouth and thoroughly enjoying it. She is number one on the JV tennis team. This I must quote: "I was a bit surprised at the dormitory arrangements when she signed in early this fall. 'Spud Bray would go into immediate cardiac arrest if he were to return for a visit. I like the new look.'" Very well put, Ed.
Dick Wells feels he has finally arrived since he became a grandfather. His son Bill is with the Southern California Association of Governments in Los Angeles. Have you seen the new arrival yet, Dick?
Winthrop Watts says he retired from the practice of medicine on November 1 and now resides at Box 44, Mirror Lake, N.H. 03853.
Ed Hill says his firm, Hill & Lind, Inc., is working out quite well and that had he known a small engineering firm could be so successful, he would have been in business long ago. Glad for your success, Ed.
Gordon Kibbe retired August 1 after 42 years with the Shawmut First Bank in Springfield, Mass. He is so busy now with Kiwanis, Visiting Nurses Association, YMCA, and the Library and Museum Association that he has no time for boredom.
Dick Loughry DDS reports he is progressing nicely after a laryngectomy in September. He is even working part-time. Good for you, Dick.
Bob Offenbach wrote that he is still holding forth at Management Recruiters at Boston. He won the award as top salesman in the east and one of the top five in the USA. He said he has no idea of retirement and hopes to emulate Bernard Baruch and work into the eighties. Congratulations on the award, Bob, and hope you get your wish.
Warren Schmid retired May first after almost 42 years in the Linde Division of Union Carbide. Poor health in the past year and a half made retirement a must, he said. Hope things improve, Warren, and may you thoroughly enjoy your well deserved retirement.
All for now more tidbits coming in March issue. Again, thanks to Ed.
