Since this column will be coming to you just prior to the end of June, the most important thing to realize is that you have only until the end of this month to make your contributions to this year's Alumni Fund. Bob Field, Fred Lent and their assistant class agents have worked long and hard to make this the biggest and best giving program for our advanced 35th reunion. If you have not yet given, consider (or reconsider) your decision on participation. Remember, every little bit counts and many small gifts add up to a substantial sum. Larger gifts are, of course, greatly appreciated - but decision day is June 30!
This is your present secretary's last column after some nine years - even the Presidency of the United States mandates retirement after two terms. I wanted to express my thanks and appreciation to those members of the Class who have passed on the information about themselves and other classmates without which this column would have been an impossibility. While meeting or abusing ALUMNI MAGAZINE deadlines is a problem perennially faced by class secretaries, there is really great joy and satisfaction in keeping contact with classmates from all over the country and the world, and in contributing, at least in a small way, to class unity.
Although our Class - as were all the World War II classes - was massively disrupted, the class presidents over the years have done a masterful job of bringing the Class together. In my humble view, a most effective technique has been development and encouragement of the informal fall reunion which has developed an esprit in the Class of '43 unmatched by any other class. I would hope that these informal fall reunions will continue to grow and that my wife Susie and I shall continue to see more and more classmates at them.
To conclude, it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve you, the Class of 1943. I have only one request, namely, for the Lord's sake, send news to your new class secretary!
