A very wet but highly successful informal reunion was held in Hanover and environs on October 11-12. Although there were no Friday night festivities, the weekend started Saturday morning with a class meeting which 19 hardy souls braved the rain to attend. (A full report on the class meeting will appear in next month's column and in Herb Marx' Clanging Bells, but it should be noted that next year's informal reunion will be the weekend of October 15, the Harvard game.)
The numbers swelled by noon so that there were 45 in attendance for the annual picture at the '43 memorial. No head count is available for attendees at the game (successfully won by the Hanover Indians whose motto was "Make the Quakers Eat Their Oats"), but George Munroe had a small business going on the side delivering umbrellas back to husbands in the stands from wives who had departed for the warmth and dryness of the Hanover Inn.
The evening festivities were a smashing success with 59 classmates and wives showing up for cocktails, dinner and dancing at Stell Hall in Tuck School.
The Saturday attendees at meetings, pictures, tailgating and dinner included Gil and Mitzi Augenblick with daughter Kate who is now a student at Dartmouth. Judge George Barlow and wife Jane were there with Killer and Marie Kane. Bob and Bunny Clark were up from their Eastman residence along with Fritz and Nancy Geller and Hud and Lois King, all of whom were staying at the Clark's. Pat Crance was in from the Denver area and Kelly Coffin (together with son Tris) was up from Atlanta. Kelly stayed with Ed and Dottie Lider at the Lider's residence in Eastman as did Ben and Janet Edmonds.
Jim and Rita Doucette stayed with Church and Dorothy Leonard at the Leonard's home in Hanover. Bob and Joan Ehinger were among the crowd staying at the Chieftain Motel, "hosted" by John and Fran Goode who own the Chieftain. Your secretary, wife Susie Gray, and sons Tony and Geoff sloughed up from our house in New Hampshire while Frank and Margot Hartmann with daughters Regina and Sondra were up from their house in Eastman. George and Ellie Munroe also stayed at the Hartmann's. Tuss and Carol Hand were in town as a vacation from the Hand Melon Farm while Phil and Shirley Jackson were up from Newton for the day with daughter Marcia. Frank Hussey was reported as having been seen and Hugh and Jeanne Lena were there with their children Peter, Susan, and Mark. Hugh noted that he and Fritz Geller had been '43 roommates, that their fathers were close friends and classmates in the Class of 1912 and that sons Jim Geller and Pete Lena are classmates in the Class of 1979.
Fred and Polly Lent were in from Chicago and Don and Louise McCorkindale were up from Holyoke. Bill Meack made it up from Connecticut for the weekend as did Bud Hall while Bus and Pat Mosbacher were up only for the day.
Jack Pfeiffer and son Eric were in town as were Don and Connie Reich who stayed with the Hands in Greenwich, N.Y., on Friday night. Andy and Clare Caffrey stayed with Tony and Kit Farrell at the Farrell's home in Norwich. Eddie and Lorraine O'Brien were up from Connecticut and brought Peggy Winters. Dick and Hazel Bugbee, Bob and Jean Grant, John and Betty Hyde, and John and Ann Keefe filled out the list of out-of-towners. That, of course, does not take account of Paul and Ruth Young who qualify as in-towners and without whom there would have been no arrangements.
A tapering off brunch was hosted by Bob and Bunny Clark down in Eastman on Sunday morning at which most of this Saturday group was in attendance, plus Dusty Lewis who was in from Ohio.
At the Sunday brunch, those who could see without their glasses wrote notes to Bud Silverstein and Marge Stockwell, both of whom have been extremely ill. Those of you who know Bud and/or Marge might drop them a note directly joining the well-wishers from the fall reunion. Their addresses, respectively, are: Leo Silverstein Jr., 42 Holmwood Avenue North Haven, Conn; and Mrs. Marge Stockwell, 6 Ledgewood Road, Winchester, Mass.
More details next month; but it were a good 'un.
