Thanks to Class President John Hauge, who is currently an investment banker in New York City, I have received bits and pieces of class news from '73s all over the country. Evidently John took some notes while he was making phone calls for the Alumni Fund. At any rate, he passed on the following news about various members of the class.
Owen Hughes, who studied in England as a Rhodes Scholar after his graduation from Dartmouth, is presently an attorney with the law firm of Sullivan and Cromwell in New York City. Harry Brightly is also an attorney, but I am not sure where he is practicing. BobEden has finished medical school and is in the midst of his internship. Swift Barnes is an industry specialist with Citibank. Tom Shiland has married Maureen McGreal and is currently in his fourth year with the Environment Protection Agency, in the enforcement division. BobRosenblum is now a CPA in South Windsor, Conn. Phil Catchings is an employment coordinator with AT&T. The last word about BobHaynes was that he is working as a construction carpenter in Alaska. John Liebert is living in the Cleveland area and is presently working for IBM. John Jenkins is a health care consultant with Arthur Young and Company in the District of Columbia. Dick Fuscone is working for A. G. Becker Inc. and living in North Stamford, Conn. John Woodhouse now has three children and is teaching naval science at the University of Virginia. Steve Morelli is a computer consultant with ADP Network Services. Jim Morton is working for the Bank of America in London.
The Somerville Journal here in Massachusetts recently published a lengthy article about Mike Capuano, who is one of the rising political stars in Somerville. He has already been elected alderman from one of the city's wards and this year he ran for mayor. In a crowded field which included the incumbent, Mike made a very credible showing, finishing in third place. Mike graduated from Boston College Law School and is currently chief legal counsel to the taxation committee of the Massachusetts state legislature.
Another '73 making a political debut is Maurice Roberts, who was recently appointed to fill a vacancy on the board of selectmen in the town of Orford, N.H.
Across the river from Orford, Janet Terry has been active putting her considerable skills as a pianist to work as a music teacher in Bradford and Newbury, Vt. Janet has performed several solo recitals in the Upper Valley and has accompanied numerous singing groups and individual artists both in Vermont and New Hampshire.
On the wedding circuit, Rich Merrill was recently married to Thea Fabio. Both Rich and Thea are graduates of the University of Texas Law School; they are presently living in Houston, where Rich is district counsel for Texas Oil and Gas Corporation. And I just received word that Dave Zelie married Susan Brank '79 last summer in Rollins Chapel. Dave is the pastor for the Dartmouth Area Christian Fellowship in Hanover. Nick Simonelli was also recently married. He and Mary Louise Neat tied the knot in Urbana, Ill., last August. Mary received her degree in ornamental horticulture from the University of Illinois in 1977 and is now working on a master of science in horticulture. Nick went on for his M.A. in engineering psychology at the University of Illinois after spending two years in the Peace Corps; he is currently working on a doctorate in that field. And John Clark was married last spring in Greenville, Del., to Elizabeth Baumger, a graduate of Trinity College.
And a final note: Steve Stetson is the offensive coordinator for the spectacularly successful Boston University football team. Steve and former Dartmouth assistant coach Rick Taylor have completely rejuvenated the football program at Boston University. I believe that B.U. won its division title this fall for the first time in years. Steve and Sue now have a baby girl and live in Millis, Mass.
Well, that's it for this month. If you have a chance, please drop me a note. Any and all class news is welcome.
