What sort of hobbies do you suppose your classmates have been pursuing or will now pursue? They would certainly include gardening, since on our reunion questionnaire 46 percent of the class listed that as one of the regular activities. Next most frequently listed hobbies were ones that could be enjoyed any time of year: woodwork and photography. Then comes "alumni activity," listed by one-sixth of the classmates, and that's often a yearround activity. Next time s«ve'll check out some of the more surprising, one-of-akind hobbies.
For some, a busy work schedule still takes over the hobby time like for BillRench, who told me he's still giving insurance a full pitch. He finds his challenges working with policies we never heard of 25 or even ten years ago. Currently, a skilled nursing home policy has his prime attention for us in '34 that seems logical since we are increasingly aware of the need for protection against that possible financial disaster .... SolJacobson is another not yet retired. Seen at the memorial service in Manhattan for his old college roommate, Alan Hewitt, he still lives and works in New Hope, Pa., when he isn't travelling in connection with his longtime career as a theatrical press agent.
While retired from the railroad business, Mac Collins told me recently that he continues to use the formula he found early for enjoying retirement in Sarasota only he seems to have added to the community agencies he handles. He's still head of Siesta Key Association, is a "FISH," but scores his biggest lift currently from Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), where he helps local small businesses make a turn into the profit lane. He and Mary did however take time off last summer to see Nova Scotia and visit friends up north.
Travel plans are also being consolidated now. Bill and Margaret Judd liked their '34 Danube River cruise last summer so much they're going to cruise around Spain, Morocco, and Portugal with a Swarthmore group this spring. EthelynHedges also believes one good trip deserves another. For her, it's a return to London on a theater tour that checks out the shows before Broadway gets them, and she has friends from the days when Dave had bank duty in London.
In the November issue I reported the Jim Keeleys were exploring Kenya on a Dartmouth Alumn Abroad tour and lo! the congenial travel group included Dottie Morton. She has a Florida waterfront base that she finds fascinating, but she also likes to check out family and friends wherever they are and discover new places like in the Pacific Northwest and the Rockies last summer before joining the African safari.
At time of our 50th, 18 percent reported they had visited Australia and New Zealand, which puts it even with Southeast Asia. To those who have travelled "down under" we can now add George and Gisele Collins, who, according to a colorful picture, were making friends with some of the Australian natives this fall (i.e., the kangaroos) prior to seeing beautiful New Zealand while George tried to adjust to driving on the wrong side of the road.
Those two countries were listed three years ago as "most interesting trip" by 14 of our classmates: Flamen "Bill" Ball,George Cogswell, Dick Emerson, GeorgeEngel, Harry Espenscheid, Moe Frankel,Perry Gilbert, Harry Gilmore, DickHouck, Alexander Jones, Fritz Mosher,John D. Murphy, Stan Neill, and FrankSweetser.
Bob Kolbe, who is still fully active in the textile business, and I were among those present when President McLaughlin came to N.Y.C. in November for a good discussion of the College today and the background for his decision to relinquish the presidency next June. It reemphasized points made in his October 6th report to the faculty, a copy of which was sent to you last fall.
The year ended on a sad note for DonLegro he lost his wife, Bunnie, after an extended illness. They were married over 50 years, and she had been regularly at our reunions. We extend to Don our sincere sympathy.
A reminder: with spring arriving there is another of the new "Parents/Alumni in the College" programs just ahead, April 19-24. It's a fine opportunity to experience college in 1987. Just write c/o 201 Wentworth Hall, Hanover, NH 03755 for details.
