The end of a decade is certainly an apt time for reflection and anticipation. For some of us it was also a time of celebration. Dick Birnie, Dave Owens, and Larry Goss helped commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge as 1989 drew to a close. Larry, a professional planner based in Concord, N.H., recently assumed the presidency of the New England Chapter of the American Planning Association. He's hoping to promote more planning courses at colleges and universities in the Northeast, including the College, where Larry feels it's time to reactivate at least introductory planning offerings. Dave Owens has ably passed on his love of the outdoors to sons Adrian and Jonathan, who are members of the class of 1990, the woodsmen's team, and Cabin & Trail.

Capt. Bill Hayden, meanwhile, celebrated the New Year as CO of the navy's newest Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln. Though admitting that his greatest goal was becoming an astronaut, Bill, a veteran fighter pilot, admits to more than a little pride in his newest assignment: "At this point we're the best ship the navy's got."

Somewhat removed from the perils of the open seas, Dennis Kaufman, engineer, builder, and sculptor extraordinaire, nonetheless ended 1989 on a note of frustration. Having designed, built, and lovingly tiled his new indoor lap pool at his home in Norwich, Vt., Dennis was all set to enjoy the delights of heated swimming as the temperature outside plummeted to sub-zero records, when the price of fuel oil skyrocketed, and the dream evaporated. Or maybe just postponed until Dennis's newest technological breakthrough.
