46 We'll call this the New England update. Ronald"Shipwreck" Kelley has been retired for over a year, but he's not just relaxing. He was elected a selectman in Manchester, Mass., to finish another selectman's unexpired term. Apparently he wowed 'em for he's now been elected for a full term. Ship told me he still plays golf and is a ten handicap. This is what he told me. It might be in order to get someone in the area to pay him a visit and see if this is so. Bob Hooper is still in Manchester, where he's been, as far as I know, all his life. Bob is also retired over two years now. I didn't get a chance to talk to him "but spoke to daughter Sally. Bob and his wife were sailing on the bounding main, or at least off the coast of Maine. They've been spending part of the winters in Naples, Fla. I'm happy to report that Bob is fully recovered from injuries received while skiing.
Art Young is our new class representative on the Alumni Council. Art still lives in Greenwich, Conn. He's not retired. Far from it. Just took over a new company called State Street Financial Services. It's Boston-based, but Art travels the whole land. Says he has to work because son Jimmy is still at Dartmouth, class of '93. Older son Teddy '89 works for a bank in Zurich, Switzerland. Art serves on the Council as the replacement for DuncanFitchet, who passed away last April.
Nort Virgien has called it a day. He retired in 1989 and sold his real-estate business. He's still in Avon, Conn., but has purchased a condo in Longboat Key, Fla., and plans to spend half of the year there. He said he'd welcome any visitors. For those who don't know, Longboat Key is somewhere near Sarasota, Fla. Who am I to tell? I haven't been south of Trenton, N.J.!
Spoke to both Jack Sayers and WhiteyBurnham, our mini-reunion bosses. Those dates again are October 16-17. The Saturday night dinner is with the class of 1947 at Alumni Hall. The Kimballs will host the usual Friday night bash at their palatial South Park Street mansion, and after that, Dartmouth Night festivities. Let's have a good turnout for our expected victory over Eli Yale. When I spoke to Whitey he had just fashioned an 83 at the Hanover C.C. He sounded ho-hum about it, so perhaps he's better than Kelley's 10.
The above, such as it is, I gathered by making phone calls. I really do get my mail at the address below, so why not drop me a line. Forgetting the column, I would like to hear from you.
We have lost three more of our classmates. Wallace B. Owens died May 1; John H.Drury died November 22,1991; and HowardM. Marjerison died in 1973. This last was only reported to me by the College in July of this year.
