What was going on in this country when we became pea-greeners? Here are a few items I gleaned from the "Chronicles of America:" (1) In the Olympics of 1928, completed just before we matriculated, the U.S. won only one of 22 track events. (2) On September 16 a severe hurricane struck Florida, killing 2000! (3) On October 9 the Yankees swept the World Series, defeating the Cards. (4) On November 6 Herbert Hoover captured the White House with promises of prosperity, a chicken in every pot, and a car in every garage.

We have two reports from widows. Ruth(Mrs. John Lee) Potter elderhostled in July with Jane (Mrs. Richard) Allen at Dowd's Inn, Lyme,. N.H. They enjoyed being near Dartmouth, visited the cold weather lab and the Hood, and golfed at Lake Morey. Dowd's is great for elderhostlers who want private bathrooms, they say. (Your secretary, an elderhostler, appreciates those sentiments). Carol Gerstley writes that she recendy divorced Norman Hofheimer and will retain her previous name and address: Carol K, Gerstley or Mrs. William Gerstley, 1775 Oak Hill Drive, Huntington Valley, PA 19006.

Carl Ward writes from Santa Rosa, Calif., that he'll soon be visiting this piece of the Sonoran Desert and will call us. I'm looking forward to it, Carl.

We need news. Please tell us about yourself, your family, your travels, and yes, even your travails. To get us started, here's my story.

I retired from my medical practice in the village of Watkins Glen, N.Y., in 1983 and moved to Arizona in 1985. This summer, escaping the three digit heat of Phoenix, we went west to elderhostels in California, east to Watkins Glen, Boston, and Hanover to visit my daughter, my son, and Dartmouth, respectively. We also sojourned in the Kansas City area, where Ruth has two daughters and four grandchildren. My grandchildren are scattered militarily. One grandson is in flight training at Fort Rucker, Ala., the other at the U.S. Military Academy, and my ROTC second-lieutenant granddaughter will be at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

Sadly, we report die deaths of William L.Spang, George R. Foss, and Charles D.Doerr. Obituaries will follow.
