Sometimes that trek up the three flights of stairs to your apartment just about kills you. Other times it's the dash from the subway Entrance to your office in the rain. And don't forget the agony endured on those trips from the couch to the refrig- erator—pure torture.
Sean Quinn embarked April 14 on a walking trip across America. He set out from Quoddy Head State Park in Maine, the eastern-most point in the United States. His planned route meanders through Washington, D.C., Atlanta, and New Orleans, then St. Louis and over to Oregon, which makes it abundantly clear that Sean was not a geography or math major.
Sean saved money for his sojourn by working last year in San Francisco and has divided his trip into three sections which will permit him to work each of the next two winters to fund his trip. Usually Sean travels on highways, bringing him into contact with more people than he would meet on trails. His trip was inspired by the book Walk Across America and he plans to follow a similar (direct?) route. In one interview Sean admitted that he may not reach his destination, "I might fall in love along the way."
Unfortunately for Sean there is one fewer eligible '93 en route, Joanne Wright married Lars Reierson (Harvahd '87) onjune 17. Christy Neumann and Jen Beams jetted in from California (Christy works for a venture capital firm in San Francisco and Jen teaches at Stevenson Prep School in Pebble Beach); Allison Hammond took time off from babysitting and an M.F.A. program in Atlanta (how these fit together is beyond me); and Allison Salkeld and Lou Kozloff came from D.C. (Allison is consulting and Lou started law school at UPitt this fall).
The New York contingent included Jen Ogden, Julie DeTraglia, Kira Thomas, and Marc Steifman. (Jen is a circulation analyst for Spy Magazine, Julie is poised to step into Connie Chung's shoes and is biding her time in marketing and distribution for CBS, and at the time of my update, Kira and Marc were living at the Thomas ranch and trying to decide where to go to law and business school, respectively.)
school begun this fall either Tulane or the University of Florida), Anne Whitman (Price Waterhouse in Boston), and Katie Bain (began an oceanography Ph.D program at the University of Washington).
Brenda Vale had a near-death experience this summer at her home in Arlington, Va., transforming her car into a banana, "I was driving through a red light and he was driving through a green light." She escaped with a bruise.
Jenny Evans announced her engagement to Ken "Beevis" Bilchick. Jenny spent the summer in Damascus and is now back at Tufts in the second year of her master's program at the Fletcher School. Ken began his first year at Johns Hopkins Medical School this fall.
Derek Sampson is working for Furman (no relation to Mark) Lumber, 1-800-THE- WOOD, in Lincoln, Mass. He says, "it's kinda like commodities," and going to grad school is kinda like real life.
Everyone's favorite student/mother at Dartmouth, Courtney Williamson, gave birth to a daughter, Veronica, in May.
After finishing his teaching year at the Millbrook School in New York, Brandon Adams spent the summer as the musical director of a theater company in North Conway.
Craig "Graduated" Sakowitz (director of the Ravine Lodge) and Dave "I've Worn The Buttons Off My Calculator" Kaiser saw several of the plays on which Brandon worked. "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Kurt Weill!"
Till next time...
