President Wright's letter to alumni/ae of Feb. 9 enclosing a statement of the Board of Trustees of Feb. 6, together with his subsequent statement made in an interview with the Daily D that the Trustees' decision would put an end to the Greek system, was reported in The New YorkTimes, our local newspaper, and a column by Bill Buckley. In the days ahead most interesting should be developments from these actions by the authorities.
Perhaps those authorities could get guidance on handling problems of booze and drugs from a statement by the governor of Minnesota, "You cannot legislate against stupidity with any hope for success." Booze and drugs have been with mankind for 10,000 years or so, and no one has produced a lasting solution for the problems caused by the abuse and/or unsafe use of those substances. Counseling the binge drinkers and drug users instead of punishing the Greeks would seem to be far less costly and worth a try.
The glory days of Winter Carnival as '31ers knew them have passed into history, but the current highly intelligent and ingenious undergraduates will find ways, as did the citizenry during Prohibition, to circumvent the dictum of Big Brother. Have fan, gang, but if any one of you does something stupid while enjoying same, do something different next time.
Have a fine summer, all, but don't forget John Boormeester and his troops in their efforts for the Alumni Fund.
