It is now autumn in New York and those of us who are Yankee fans are looking forward to the playoffs and, we hope, the World Series. Yankee fans at least have some baseball games to watch in October, while waiting for the football season to heat up.

Justice Robert J. Cordy, associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary doctor of laws degree at the 93rd commencement of the New England School of Law. Bob was appointed to the Supreme Judicial Court in 2001.

Classmate Peter Hutchinson has co-authored a book with David Osborne titled ThePrice of Government (Getting the Results We Needin an Age of Permanent Fiscal Crisis). The book describes a radically different approach to budgeting that focuses on buying results for citizens rather than cutting or adding to last years spending programs. It illustrates how governmental leaders can use consolidation, competition and customer choice to focus on results in order to save millions of dollars while improving public services. The book has received rave reviews from diverse public figures from Rudolph Giuliani to Al Gore, and it is recommended as required reading to all public leaders. Peter is a founder and president of the Public Strategies Group in St. Paul, Minnesota, and presently resides in Minneapolis.

Congratulations are in order for Betty Jo and Mike Hannigan on the recent nuptials of their son, Michael. Best wishes to Michael and his lovely wife, Kim. Michael is a very talented pianist who earns his keep as a professional musician in the New York area.

If you haven't heard, the class of 1971 finished the year with $420,296 from 324 alumni (46.9 percent participation) in the 2003 Alumni Fund. The great results were achieved through the outstanding efforts of our fund chairman, Tim Dreisbach, and Dick Woosfer, who worked hard to increase our class participation. Congratulations to Tim and Dick for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of our class and the College. In addition, it has been confirmed that our class has now set the "out-year giving record" for a class 33 years out. Furthermore, we have set the "out-year record" for years 1 through 33 since our graduation—a great record for the class of 1971..

Unfortunately, I must report the death of classmate Michael Press, who died July 17 following a courageous six-month battle with cancer. Michael is survived by his wife, Priscilla, son Michael Press Jr. and daughter Priscilla Press. While at Dartmouth Mike was a member of Psi U. The class extends its condolences to the Press family.
