This month, my friends, you really have me "grasping the gunny" or "reeling on the ropes" if you happen to like that one better. The replies to my postcard bombardment for news has got to improve or we just ain't going to have even a resemblance of a column.
Actually my best source of news has been through my visits to Red Jensen at the Mary MacArthur Polio Research Center in Wellesley Hills, Mass. Several of the gang have been writing Red faithfully but you all have his address as of last month's column, so let's get busy with those letters. Forget writing me or anyone else, but get some word to Red. He has about eight hours a day in the lung and then spends the balance of the time in a chest respirator. Red's rugged physique and spirit are standing by him, and as you would expect, his morale is terrific, but the day is a long one, and I can assure you letters would be appreciated.
Skip Morse as Mayor of Easton, Pa., has 35,000 vociferous bosses so if you have only one be thankful. Skip put on a door-knocking campaign that turned out a 16-year-old Democratic regime and now has more civic improvement programs than you can count. Easton is getting more one-way streets, more parking meters, a reorganized Police Dept., a two- million dollar capital improvement program for the water works, and a new sewage treatment plant. Looks like they are really getting some action. If you come back in June you can get the details from Skip in person as he and wife Penny are planning to be there.
Beeck Chapin is practicing medicine in New York with an office at 60 East 58th St. His specialty is allergy, and he is associated with the Institute of Allergy at the Roosevelt Hospital. Sure, Beeck is planning on reunion and so is Boz Noland who sent us a note this month from Newport News. Boz as usual is up to his ears in business, with his responsibilities increased by the death of his dad last fall.
