The mail bag this month brings several interesting letters. The first from Andy Murtha, our esteemed Treasurer in Indianapolis, who asks that some of the reluctant troops please send their class dues in - it's only a fiver, so get your check off to Andy this week, won't you? Andy sends us a write-up he recently received on Bob Sandoe put out by the American School in Manila, Philippine Islands. In September, Bob took over there as Upper School Principal and is now well engaged in the life of a schoolmaster many miles from home. Bob has been teaching for the past six years and spent several years at Choate in Connecticut with a certain amount of time being spent in administrative work there. He remarks that it is nice to see some female faces at this co-ed school since all his past educational experience had been at boys' schools. Bob's brother Nick '45, as you know, is Assistant Director of Development for the College.
Another letter this month from Dick Priest up in Groton, Mass., is an interesting one. Dick writes that he is operating two 600-foot ski tows on his apple farm and says "my slopes are fast and protected from wind and sun." He reports that his old roommate, Dr. Fred Richardson, has five sons and is one ahead of Dick and his wife who have four girls. He also remarks that two of them are skiing already. Nice to hear from you, Dick.
Russ Chase '45, who is with International Paper, was in our town the other day and phoned me but we didn't get a chance to get together - maybe next time. He reports Jud Hannigan, our '46 football captain, also with IP., is an Assistant Superintendent at the Hudson River Mill. Jud and Grace are living in Corinth, N. Y., and have five little Hanmgans, including four prospective Dartmouth footballers. Incidentally, Jud was in Hanover last month along with Will Graulty and wife from West Hartford, Don Barr from Providence, "Abie" Hinman down from Rome, N.Y., and old hockey star Bill Riley with wife and family up from Bean Town. I would imagine that some of these guys and gals got in some skiing while on The Plain.
KUDOS AND A WAH HOO WAH - two of our sons of '46 have recently gone up the ladder in the banking business, I am happy to report. The first is Knox Phagan who has joined the First-City National Bank of Binghamton as an assistant vice president with duties in the customer relations and business development fields. Knox did graduate work at Columbia in Business Administration after Dartmouth and for the past two years has been a general partner of LaGrange & Co., New York City investment firm. Prior to that he was with the Industrial Bank of Commerce in New York City, also specializing in new business development.... The other banker in the promotion ranks is Ralph Fifield, who was made an assistant "veep" with the First National in Boston. "Fife" has been with the Boston bank for five years and has spent most of his time in the loan department. He and wife Sally live in Danvers, and have one son. As you know, he was a fighter pilot in World War II and was called back to service in the Korean conflict in 1951 for a year and a half. Congrats to both Knox and Fife! ... Our old Gile Hall neighbor and star swim- mer, Al Belinkie, has formed a new law practice in Bridgeport with the mayor of that city, Samuel J. Tedesco.; the firm will now be known as Tedesco, Blawie and Belinkie. Al has practiced law in the Connecticut city for a number of years after graduating from Yale Law School and has done some teaching at the Bridgeport Engineering Institute. "Belink" has been active in the State Bar Association and is a member of the Sterling House Council in Stratford, the Stratford Republican Town Committee; he is also a member of the board of trustees of his church. Al and Hilda have three children and are living at 84 Sunflower Ave. in Stratford.... Les Boyce, who is an assistant professor in accounting at the University of Connecticut School of Business Administration, recently received an award of $100 for an article he wrote for the monthly periodical of the Manufacturers' Association of Connecticut. It was entitled "A Partial Solution to the Capital Shortage." The article was adjudged the best appearing in the publication in the past year. Les was a CPA before he joined the University at Storrs. ... I think we might have mentioned in a prior column that George Magoon had recently become an Episcopal minister but we're now happy to tell you that he has been ordained into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church and serves as pastor at St. Luke's church in Woodsville and the Church of the Epiphany in Lisbon, N.H. This is near home for George, as he grew up in Littleton and spent some time in New Hampshire as YMCA secretary for the Western District before going back to divinity school at Berkeley in New Haven in 1954. George and Mrs. Magoon have four daughters and are living at the Rectory in Woodsville. George, you certainly are to be commended for your years of sacrifice and preparation to achieve the career of your choice.
HITHER AND YON - Bob Beetham is in Brooklyn, N.Y.... Ed Blatt is living at 3630 Guam Court in Cincinnati and Bob Goldman is in Woodbridge, Conn.... Dick Howe, the old skier, is clear out in Salt Lake City - How are the slopes out there, Dick? ... Don Kenseth is up in Canada at Etobicoke, Ontario.... Al Rigby is living in Bellevue, Long Island, N.Y., and Art Sharr is the high school librarian at Greenwich, Conn. High and living in Plainville.... Out in the Midwest Jerry VanHalsema is in Terre Haute, Ind., and Floyd Inde is in Racine, Wis.... Dr. John Evans is in Rye, N.Y., and Hank Rea can be addressed at 320 East 72nd St. in the Big City.... Johnny Rockwell is still in San Francisco but Earle Angstadt, who has been Merchandising Manager for Young and Rubicam's San Francisco office for the past two years, has been appointed Vice President and Manager of that department in New York City and has moved East to take over his new duties.
That's about it gang - we'd love to have some letters in the old mail bag next month.
