"Bone-chewer" and all that fancy frenchy stuff. Crepes suzette and Chevrolet to all you garcons (pronounced gar-kun by unsuave me to the undying dislike of the French). I am, of course, overwhelmed by the verbosity displayed by Messrs. Osterhout and Holmberg in last month's column and I will try to pack this one equally full of juicy morsels of gossip and slander.
First of all, a confession. I saw Hal Knott in Cannes, France and he told me all about his wedding to a lovely young lady better than a year ago, but then I lost the slip of paper with the particulars on it. My apologies, Hal, but we all know you are married. Also I had a couple of talks with First Lieutenant Cartter Frierson in Munich and he is just as happy as a first lieutenant in Munich can be.
The Mail Pail is full of goodies this month, although some of them are a bit old. Ford Daley was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for summer study in Chemistry, at Yale last summer. Ford and wife, Gloria, have returned to teaching in California with small daughter, Christin. Frank Stephens, who married Miss Gretchen Davis right after graduation, is now the proud owner of a year-old son, Gregory, and a job with Humble Oil in Grand Isle, La. Ron Heinemann, who is a paragon of secretaries, and whose Phi Delt newsletter is a joy to behold is now a Stores Officer aboard the "USS Howard W. Gilmore" in Charleston. Ron writes that Howie andTammy Keys are still in Florida, where Howie is recruiting employees for RCA. Big Dan Berry married the former Miss Carolyn Macintosh in Tulsa last February. Bounding bachelors Bobby Moore, Don Wells, and Chuck Ritchie are reported in good shape in various parts of the world.
Fritz and Cora Kern and daughter, Kathryn, are now back in Detroit where daddy is using his M.B.A. to analyze profits for Lincoln-Mercury. Fritz passed along the dope that Jack Reno got his M.B.A. at Northwestern and is trying to get his service out of the way so that he can become a rich investment broker. Tom McLaughlin is still at the University of Washington Law School after spending a summer as a forest ranger (have any trouble with Yogi Bear, Tom???).
Ron and Joan Wybranowski have a son! Ronald Junior was born on August 7 in Hartford where the Wybranowskis are living.
Rich Selph gets my vote as the champion letter writer of the class. I didn't think Marines could be funny, but this one is. Rich is flying big transports out of Iwakimi, Japan and loving all those "hotsi-baths" from the sound of things. Rich has already passed the 1000-hour mark in the air and is evidently a big deal around the airways. He hopes to return to Dartmouth and finish up his studies this fall. Rich reports that CleveCarney is a frog (I assume that's supposed to be frogman) on the West Coast.
Jim Gilchrist dropped me a line all about how he is now in his third year at Stanford Law School and that he was married on September 14 to the former Miss Lew Dorman. Tom Russell and John Damon helped eat the cake.
Rog McArt spent a month here in Cincinnati this summer and had many laughs at the expense of the locals before he returned to Stanford to finish learning how to outsmart IBM machines.
So much for the mail, now to the clipping service's contribution to class unity. Judging from the clippings, we have about the most united class in the history of classes or at least since the first alumni was invented in late July of 237 B.C. The only problem is that all you men are uniting with girls! Now I realize that it's fun to get married, but where is that Devil-May-Care, Chin-In-The-Wind, Be-Nothing-If-Not-Independent spirit that used to be our dominant emotion?? At the rate the list of weddings is growing there won't be enough Clear Thinkers left to have a decent stag party pretty soon. Gotta admit though, you guys sure get caught by a lot of cute girls. A batch of wedding clippings makes my whole day. Miss Susan Slobin is engaged to Paul Shaman while Paul is pursuing his doctorate in math at Columbia. Mike Gazzaniga and Miss Linda Jean Rea are engaged out in California whilst Mike studies at Caltech. Dave Schmidt, who is studying medicine at Harvard, is now engaged to Miss Priscilla Morse of Amesbury, Mass. By now, DonRoberts and the former Miss Marja-Riitta Lianko of Helsinki, Finland are happily wed. Don is studying at Harvard to be an architect. Miss Karin Sandal and Lt.(j.g.) PeteStuart are engaged, as of last July. Pete is on a destroyer, the "USS Orleck," out of Long Beach. How do ya like the Navy, Pete, as a civilian (whoopee) I am, of course, very interested. The former Miss Josene Mae Stephens and Mike Steinberg were married last June in Swampscott, Mass. Mike is still plugging away at Harvard Law (cheeze, there are a lot of us at Harvard Graduate Schools - hope you troops haven't forgotten how to cut out with a good old "Wah-Hoo-Wah"). Bare Corbus and Miss Priscilla Jean Fleming had a reception preceded by a wedding on July 19 in Ridgewood, N. J. Rog Coates and Jon Sperling were Barc's ushers (that must have been color!). G. Barclay and his bride will be living near Stanford where Bare is going to get his M.B.A.
The military information service is on the ball as usual and has reported a few gems about our boys in khaki. Norm Carpenter was selected soldier of the month at his Army base in the Canal Zone last June. JayTorok is being trained at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas as an intelligence specialist. Dave Pullen was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force in July and is stationed in Illinois. Curtis Low, a First Lieutenant in the flyboys, was awarded a medal for meritorious service by the Air Force last July. Curt is stationed in Itazuke, Japan. I don't know if I reported this before or not, but Curt is married to the former Miss Marcia Sherwood of Middleton, Mass.
While discussing weddings, here is a late arrival. Miss Virginia Ann Amstutz and John Wilhelm were wed on July 6 in Youngstown. John is getting his M.B.A. at Western Reserve.
And here is a kudo to inspire us all to further effort. Chip Myers just received his Master's in Public Affairs from Princeton.
That's it, classmates, you are now officially well-informed. Do not neglect to shower me with letters, notes, and presents this coming year, the rewards are great (free soap) and the penalties severe (slander). Thanks very much to Holmberg and Osterhout for turning out a fine column when I was unable to do so. Best wishes to all.
Aboard the USCGC Evergreen on herrecent oceanographic survey off Greenlandwere (I to r) Navy men John Goodman '60 and Russ Boss '61, and surveymembers David Nutt '41 and Dr. Lawrence Coachman '47.
