The wind is blowing about 40 knots the temperature is edging close to freezing the trees are completely barren of leaves — it really looks like winter - the Big Green has been beaten: all of these factors contribute to a less' than beautiful picture up here in the hills of N. H. Feeling that there is no solace to be found in the bleak countryside at the moment, I happily turn to the world at large where all sorts of classmates are making news and doing interesting things that are worth reporting.
The first intriguing bit of news concerns Bill Staley Jr. who recently received an M.A. degree in Oriental and Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. This sounds great and suggests further activities which should be interesting, particularly as they may relate to his work in the State Department. How about bringing us up to date, Bill?
During the summer Dr. Dick Young was elected Vice President and Assistant Director of Research of Polaroid Corporation. Prior to joining Polaroid about a year ago he had been with American Cyanamid. Dick received his Ph.D. degree at Columbia after graduating cum laude from Dartmouth in 1946.
Jim Barnett continues to move onward and upward and is now Vice President of the Home Products Division of Shulton, Inc., of Clifton, N. J. He is still president of the Aerosol Corporation which was acquired by Shulton in 1961. Aerosol markets Glis Spray Starch and Jato Spray Cleaner both of which you probably have heard advertised. Jim is also president of the Wellesley Advertising Association which contributes to his being a very busy man.
Also during the summer, Len Wilson joined the United Fruit Company as senior economist, a newly created position. Len came to his new appointment from E. I. duPont deNemours and had previously been with General Motors and Shell Oil Company in similar positions.
Dr. Roger Lochhead has been elected a medical director of Bankers National Life Insurance Company. Roger received his M.D. degree from Cornell, interned at Bellevue Hospital in New York and had his residency at George Washington University Hospital. He was senior medical resident at Mountainside Hospital in Mt. Clair, N. J., in the mid '50's. Al Holmes was appointed manager of Investors Diversified Services, Inc., handling the Buffalo area. This giant investment company of Minneapolis, which has been much in the news in recent years, transferred Al from Detroit where he had established a record for sales leadership, also as a district manager. Eldon Wallingford was named a vice president of the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in N. Y. earlier this year. Also in the banking field, Ed Lane-Reticker was appointed an assistant vice president in the Trust Department of Connecticut Bank and Trust Company, having joined the bank in 1960. Ed is a graduate of Harvard Law School and is a member of the bars of Connecticut and North Carolina. Still digging back into early 1963 I find a report that Spence Smith continues to climb and was named manager of Pulp Sales for Weyerhauser in New York.
Incidentally, all of the above notices came in the form of very brief news clippings with nothing more than the information listed above. Sure would be nice if we could hear from you guys for a more fullyrounded report. If you're too busy, how about your wives helping us out?
Back in February I had the pleasure of announcing the engagement of John Porter to Miss Mary-Jane Tully. I now have the even happier duty to announce their marriage in Yonkers, N. Y. John is with the First National City Bank of N. Y.
An address change back in May tells me that Bob Grady is now merchandise manager of Knapp Bros. Shoe Company in Brockton. As an old shoe salesman I can recognize the problems and rewards of this position and hope the sales continue to boom. Another interesting address change shows Bill Johns as president of WLOD in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Cannot give any more background on this but would appreciate hearing from both Bill and Bob regarding their new jobs.
Commander Leo Warring has been transferred from Key West, Fla., to the U. S. Navy base at Newport. Leo has been director of Officer Training in the Fleet Sonar School and if I am interpreting the Navy release correctly, has now been made executive officer of the USS Yosemite. Welcome to the northern climate again, Warrings you're just in time for winter.
Executive Committee member Bob Hunt is in the news in Hartford, Conn., where he is a member of the Avon Board of Education. He is a partner in the law firm of Hopkins, Carey and Powell and is a former prosecutor in the Town Court as well as being active in Republican affairs. Another lawyer Brad Morehouse is vice president of the Fairfield Conn., Chamber of Commerce and moderator of the Town Meeting. He has just been named head of the Leading Citizens Division of the Community Chest Drive. Brad and wife Lorna have five children.
Writing the above brought to mind that every article I read mentioning a family seems to indicate that there are considerable children involved in the Class of 1946. It would be interesting to know just how many children we have and sometime I hope someone in the class has the ambition to undertake such a survey.
With that bit of foolishness I realize that I am near the end of news. The wind is still blowing, and it's getting colder but at least it has been pleasant to contemplate other locales. Incidentally, still referring back to the beginning of this column, it is pleasant to consider the fact that even though Dartmouth lost to Harvard and Yale, we have lost only two games in the last seventeen. That's a pretty good record for anyone.
Best regards from the hills.
