From the office of LBJ himself comes the news that Lisle Carter has been nominated to the post of assistant secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Lisle will serve as principal advisor to the Secretary in the fields of welfare, social security, and rehabilitation and will also be responsible for the coordination of departmental policy in the areas of juvenile delinquency and youth crime. Lisle, a graduate of St. John's Law School and father of five children, is leaving the Office of Economic Opportunity where he has been assistant director of interagency relations. He had previously served as deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

While still dealing with official Washington, Dick Hewlett writes of his activities as chief historian of the Atomic Energy Commission. His principal responsibility is that of writing the Commission's formal history. He and Marilyn visited Europe last year - "didn't see my old roommate RogerBrown and his son on the Matterhorn - probably because we weren't there. Most of my time outside the office is put in church work or on our auxiliary sloop which we sail on Chesapeake Bay. We haven't been in Hanover since 1956." That last statement is a terrible admission, Dick - let's not have another 10 years go by before your next visit!!

Jim Spanos reports from Manchester, N. H., that he is the state representative for enough distilleries and importing firms to make sure that New Hampshire stays well supplied. He and Amy have two children, Stephanie age 16 who is old enough to "show new interest in Dartmouth," and Sturgess, age 12, "an aspiring drummer, very partial to Zildjian cymbals - Bob Z., please take note. We never seem to have enough time (on our trips) to look up classmates mates. . . but we get to as many Hanover football games as we can, so if you see a balding, overweight type complete with patient frau and two lippy kids, it could be Jim Spanos."

Just to keep pace with Jim, and to make sure that all of New Hampshire's drinking habits are in the hands of '45s, Austin Wason is cornering the milk market in New Hampshire with the recent merger of his Wason-MacDonald Company and the Badger Farms' Creameries. Austie, president of his own firm since 1949, will serve as president and treasurer of new combine. He and Shirley live in Atkinson, N. H., with their five sons, the eldest of whom is a student at the University of New Hampshire.

Gene Wilkin broke the news first in the Class Newsletter, but Maury Frye's announcement of his candidacy for the Mas- sachusetts House of Representatives brings us up-to-date on some of his activities. Maury, a graduate of Harvard Law School, is a partner in the firm of Street and Co., and has been in the real estate field in Boston since 1946. He is currently serving as vice-president of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board and is a director of the Beacon Hill Civic Association. To both Maury, and Lou Mills, who was written about in last month's column as he announced his candidacy for the GOP nomination for U.S. Congressman, 27th New York District, best wishes for a successful campaign from your fellow '45s.

Dunbar VanDerveer has been awarded a graduate fellowship as a research associate at the Center for Executive Development, Division of Curriculum and Instruction, Albany (N. Y.) State University. Van, who lives in Schenectady, N. Y., will be on a year of sabattical leave from his position as consultant for language arts in the primary grades, as he continues his studies toward his Doctor of Education degree. Van also serves as instructor for the Syracuse University summer reading program at the Chautauqua Institute Center.

Here and there . . . Harry O'Connor, not content to take care of just Medford, Mass., from an orthopedic standpoint has recently opened another office in Reading, Mass. ... John Loper, wife and three children were pictured in their Orinda, Calif., paper while enjoying the slopes at Aspen... seen skiing at Maine's Sunday River area in February were Louise and Dick Southwick.... Ed Samuels is a newly elected director of the Brown Shoe Company... ThurstonCarpenter is branching out from his dental practice with a recent election as a corporator of the New Hampshire Savings Bank, Concord.

it is with regret that we have to report the death of Professor Emeritus Leroy J.Cook, an honorary member of the Class! Cookie, who was elected to class membership in 1955, died at age 79 at Hyannis, Mass., on his beloved Cape Cod. His In Memoriam notice will appear in this or a subsequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE,

The '45 gathering is still on for April 16 in New York City - any interested classmates in the area should contact Paul Caravatt, Harry Hampton, or Moose Rowan for particulars as to where the group may be located.
