One of our finest, Teny Bentley, has been missing since early April. Wouter Goedkoop writes: "Terry, a professional pilot, took off alone in a small plane from Steamboat Springs, Colo., to Fort Collins on April 5 and was caught in a severe winter storm. Subsequent to his disappearance, 18 inches of fresh snow and high winds delayed all search efforts.
"Many searches were held for several weeks thereafter, including Terry's wife, Meg, and son Ryan.
"On May 7, Dartmouth friends and residents gathered together in Steamboat Springs to celebrate the life of Terry and to comfort the Bentley family. The celebration, which included Fred Cook, MikeCoffield, Whitey Dunphy '61, and me, commemorated Terry's courage, modesty, and his many friendships. A few hours before the memorial celebration, a helicopter mission, sponsored by his Dartmouth friends, scanned the rugged terrain one more time. Mike Jackson has set up a memorial fund in Terry's honor .Mike gave the eulogy for the class.
"Terry came to Dartmouth from Westfield, N.J. During the five years, in which he majored in economics and graduated from Tuck, he was active in the Glee Club, rugby, UGC, C&G, Green Key, and NROTC. He was captain of the swimming team, an Ail-American in the butterfly, and set many records. After graduation, he served in Vietnam as a marine pilot and flew commercially for Pan Am in both the U.pand Europe. Terry and Meg settled m Steamboat Springs where he ran Steamboat Aviation, taught flying, flew charter hops, and was active in the Rotary Club.
"Please join us in transferring Terry's friendship and determination to all our loved ones and extending our deepest sympathies to Meg, their son Ryan 16, daughter Erin 15, and the entire family." Amen.
At the Class Officers Weekend in late April, John Clark was honored as the recipient of the Alumni Award given to an alumnus for longtime service to the College. This is the highest recognition given by Dartmouth and a round of snaps to the old whip swinger is in order. On hand at the banquet were Gene Gasbarro, Tom Komarek, Bill Sadd, Gordy and VirginiaWilliamson, Mike and Debbie Rouzee,John and Jill Schifftnan, Dan Tompkins, the Giersches, and John's son Rob '89.
