As they have done for several years now, Ed and Helen Higbee entertained a few '36ers in early November at their place on Barters Island, Maine. The group consisted of Brad Chase, Phyllis England, Pete Fitzherbert, Dede Foster, Rossand Nancy Martindale, and Bill Niss, and we enjoyed this chance to visit with old friends before the snow flew. As it turned out, some of us had one more opportunity a week later when Clay Mellor visited Bill Niss. Bill and Clay picked up De de, Nancy, and me in mid-afternoon and we proceeded to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. After a most interesting tour of the exhibits there we went on to the Stowe House, a fine restaurant in Brunswick. When we arrived we were greeted by Pete Fitzherbert a surprise planned by Bill and we had a delightful dinner in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Just yesterday (in mid-November) I received the following information from Dan Doan's daughter, Ruth Doan MacDougall:

"The Dartmouth Outing Club has recently announced that the Mousley Brook Trail on Smarts Mountain in Orford, N.H., has been renamed the Daniel Doan '36 Trail. The change was made in recognition of the efforts by Daniel Doan 'to stimulate interest and involvement in hiking and the out-of-doors.

"Dan is the author of two novels, TheCrystal Years and Amos Jackman, numerous short stories and articles, and two hiking books that have become classics, Fifty Hikes in theWhim Mountains and Fifty More Hikes in NewHampshire.

"In Fifty More Hikes [publication of the third edition of this book was mentioned in this column a year ago] he describes some of his boyhood ventures on Smarts Mountain, which he first climbed in 1929 at the age of 15.

"His latest book, Our Last. Backpack, to be published next year by Countryman Press, chronicles an excursion in the Mahoosuc Range." Congratulations, Dan!

Al Gibney, chairman of the nominating committee, would like very much to hear from anyone who would be interested in serving on the executive committee or as back up for one of the officers. We will surely need replacements in the years ahead, so if you are willing to help your class, do get in touch with Al
