THE HITCHING POST
Our statistics indicate that May has become the month for brides with five of the seven reported nuptials consummated then. Further investigation reveals that Ted Itemsen led the parade up the aisle on May 4 with the former Victoria Jebb Allen in Greenwich, Conn. She's a Smith gal and the Smiler is a broker-partner with James H. Oliphant in New York. Clift Whiteman was counted among the ticket takers.
On the same date in Danvers, Mass., FizzNichols married Jean Gibson Prentiss. AndyOliver acted as best man. Jean is a graduate of Vermont Junior College and an administrative assistant at Tufts, while Fizz collects his pay from the Old Colony Trust Company in Bean town.
Tony Poltrack and Arlene Olmstead of Pleasantville, N. Y., were wed May 18 in Stamford, Conn. The bride, a grad of Packard J. C., met Tony at General Precision Labs where she worked and he audited for his employer, Price Waterhouse.
Another Nutmeg Stater, Jack Brodie, spliced a nuptial knot the same day when Lura Lyla Ferguson of St. Paul gave the right answers in the traditional quiz. An alumna of Macalester College, Lura had been a stewardess on Northwest Orient Airlines, so you may not be surprised to learn the couple honeymooned in Hawaii. Too bad, kids! Jack, discouraging bulb snatchers as a salesman for G. E.'s large lamp division in Manhattan, had Ken Rothchild as best man.
Al Mitchell and Frances Williams of Harrold, Tex., were pronounced man and wife on May 25 in Montclair, N. J. She served as a nurse in the Air Force Hospital, Weisbaden, Germany, and in the Manhattan Veterans Hospital. Al's Navy tour included duty with the Rhine River Patrol and he's now selling for Union Carbide Chemicals Co., division of Union Carbide Corp., in New York.
On June 15 Phil Pearson and Ellen L. Schmidt of Framingham, Mass., were married. Ellen is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where Phil got his masters. He's currently working for a Ph.D. at Rutgers.
Bill Gumbart took as his better half on July 20 Elizabeth Cushman of Bridgeport, Conn. She went to Middlebury. Bill is an assistant trust officer in a New Haven bank.
WALKING THE LAST MILE
Two staunch men of the class are plodding down the final by-ways of bachelordom and have been since April. Dick Putney's engagement was announced April 18. The prospective helpmeet is Virginia Marie Potter of Briarcliff Manor, N. Y., and its Junior College. She also received both a B.A. and an M.A. from Michigan and is on the faculty of the University School in Ann Arbor. Dick earned his masters at Michigan and now is a research assistant in the physics department there.
With a September wedding planned, we ought to be able to give the final information in the next column or so on Larry Smith and Elenor Coburn of Bloomfield, Conn. Elenor graduated from Wellesley. Larry is secretary of Laurence R. Smith, Inc., West Hartford. But what do you do, man?
RATTLE PRATTLE
While we have half a dozen births listed in this section you'll find references to new arrivals liberally sprinkled thru the paragraphs following, too. Oldest news comes from Bill and Joan Sholten whose William Arnold III bowed in December 9, 1956. Great present from Santa Claus! Bill is with Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul since last groundhog day doing promotional work for special sales.
On February 11, says Alex Hoffman, the stork delivered the smartest man-in-a-grey-flannel-diaper you ever did see. The new heir answers to Peter Morse, if at all, and has a four-year-old sister Susan. Alec hustles soap chios on the Procter and Gamble account of Compton Advertising in N.Y.C.
Jim and Mary Lyons now have a little girl in their house. Katherine Phelan was born April 19. Jim, living in New Hartford, N. Y., has been training with G. E. in their Communications Products Department.
Not only do Frank and Sally Harrington in Albuquerque have their second son, Brooks Chester, whose initial howls were emitted on April 29, but Frank spent June at Purdue's Life Insurance Marketing; Institute. How could you concentrate so far from the scene of your 2 a.m. feeding stints?
Vivian and Alan Harquail announced a brand new model name of Blair Alden, "equipped with free squealing and washable seat covers" who rolled off the assembly line on May 11. This convertible hardtop (with heater and white sidewalls) weighed seven pounds, four ounces, and had a 21" wheelbase.
Already practicing passes to be thrown against Elis and Tigers is the new son of Maggie and Jim Melville. At eight pounds, two ounces, young George Horner II looks good already! Congratulations to all of you with the good news!
INKADENTAL INTELLIGENTZ
Elsewhere you may have seen the smiling faces of some familiar chums who banded together to wine and dine at the University Club in New York last June. Chuck Gardner did an excellent job of organizing the affair and says Bob Kelly guarantees to find a spot for another blast along about next March. Among those who attended Gerry Smith, Whit Williams, and Ray DeVoe are on the committee for next year's arrangements. Also Messrs. Echikson, Ferguson, Gaylord, and Miller. Bob Mcllwain, Dave Grinnell, and Bob Smith helped spread the word beforehand. Not previously mentioned but definitely present and accounted for were Graham Bailey, Paul Canada, Eddie Williams, Dick Hollands, Nob Hovde, Dave Steinberg, Dick Arnold, and Bill Christgau. It was a good caper, guys; don't miss the next one!
Checking the info on peddlers we find Gordon Pinkham selling for International Paper Co. and living in Cochituate, Mass. He and Elizabeth have two boys, Gordon Jr. and Gilbert. . . .Skip Sutton hawks space for trade publications, "Electronic Equipment" and "Contractors Electrical Equipment." Wife Pat is busy with the twins, Edward A. Jr. and Sally Anne. . . .Bob Day is with Union Bag and Paper Co. in North Carolina. . . .Jim Harms is with California Crude Sales Co., a subsidiary of Standard Oil of California, and lives in Nixon, N. J. . . . Curt Kimball is sales manager and assistant secretary for W. W. Kimball Piano Co. celebrating their 100th anniversary.
Dick Cutler is New England manager for Sawyer & Tower, Inc., selling safety and protective clothing. . . . Bill Hawkins is sales manager f£ the Electronic Industries Division of Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp. in Pasadena. Formerly with Alcoa and Union Carbide, Bill went with Consolidated in 1953 as a field engineer, later managed the Los Angeles district sales office, and last year headed the training program for the company. . . . Jim Maroney has been named general sales manager of the Bri-Mar Paint firm in Boston.
