Back in August a distinguished group gathered at the home of Ace Hall '55 in West Newton, Mass., in honor of Tom Penchoen and his bride Marie-Louise Jesperson. Tom and Marie-Louise were married in Denmark, July 13. Tom's wife is the daughter of a minister; she has been working in a library in Paris. Tom is studying for a Ph.D. in linguistics at the Sorbonne and teaches English at the Ecole Alsacien in Paris. Rick Worrell, Jon Strong, and Al andBea Booth were among those at Ace's house for the occasion.

Len Clark encouraged Bob Wolf to give us this report of the production of his first film:

After a long period of silence, I can at last send along some news of myself for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.

This past year, I completed and released my first film: "Street Song," a short documentary-study of street musicians in New York. This was a project I had worked on for almost two years,, acting as Producer, Director and Cameraman.

Since its release, "Street Song" has been" purchased by CBS-TV and shown on a special program dedicated to new films by new film makers, accepted as an invitational (non-governmental) entry in the Venice Film Festival, and alsoaccepted for the San Francisco International Film Festival.

At the moment I am in the process of completing my second film, a comedy short, which I hope to have released to neighborhood movie houses in 1964. Otherwise, I am working as a Television Film Commercial Producer for Benton & Bowles, and living in New York City with my wife, Annick, and our two daughters, Brigitte and Juliette.

Jim Breeden was recently appointed to the staff of St. Paul's Cathedral in Boston and to serve as consultant on civil rights to the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Jim directea negro boycott of Boston schools last June, working closely with Chad Day '55. About twenty-three hundred junior and senior high school students of Roxbury and Boston stayed out from school on June 18. Nearly all of them attended Freedom Schools which Jim set up in churches and social centers for classes and discussion groups under the direction of professors from Harvard, Boston University, Brandeis, and Simmons College. The demonstration was peaceful and gained Jim the position of controversial but generally highly respected leader in the city of Boston. Jim was guest preacher at Rollins Chapel in October, has been active in efforts to resolve the problems in Birmingham, Ala., and was invited by Harvard Divinity School to preside over its fall Report from the Ministry, Oct. 28-30. Jim's wife Jeanne completed her work for the Bachelor of Divinity Degree in June. They have one daughter and are living in Roxbury.

Dick Abelson finished Harvard Law School in 1959 and is with a New York law firm. Dick is married and lives in Yonkers. He and his wife have two children. Hal Gordon completed Yale Law School in '59 and is practicing law in Brooklyn. Still single, Hal is living on Ocean Ave. in Brooklyn. Fred Engelback, serving as a lieutenant in the Air Force, is Director of Civil Engineering at the Reno Air Defense Sector at Stead AFB in Nevada. Before taking this position, Fred was Highway Design Engineer for an Albany, N. Y., engineering firm.

Bob Brazelton completed his doctorate in Economics in 1961 and took a position that fall as assistant professor of Economics at Kansas State University. This fall Bob joined the faculty of the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Larry Furrer has just been appointed manager of data systems in the planning and control staff of Monsanto's plastics division in St. Louis. Larry and Pam and their three children are living in Webster Groves. . ,

Warm sunny afternoons, tailgate picnics, and good football made the October weekends particularly memorable this year. BobDumont, Ab Oakes, Tiny Strong, and JohnGorman put together some fine teamwork to organize class gatherings for the Brown, Harvard, and Yale weekends. At least 25 '56s were in Hanover October 12. It was good to see Lou and Jan Pfeifle. Lou and Jan and their children are living in Blue Point, Long Island. Lou is with his father in the children's clothing business in Patchogue, L. I. Lee and Margaret Smith have purchased a home in Chappaqua, N. Y. Jack and Beth Crowley, Ken Bridge, PeteConroy, and Bob R. Faulkner were among the group. Bob is living at home and commutes to Boston where he is a stockbroker for Kidder Peabody. Pete Conroy drove up from W. Hartford, Conn., where he is with the Internal Revenue Service. Lee and LenClark made the trip from Upper Montclair, and Len arranged for a class supper at the Keenes'. Bob and Mrs. Keene have turned their wonderful place over to. the Damens, who served dinner to about 40 of us. Ed Leja, Ted and Betsy Rowe, Bob and Sara Danziger, Hugh and Libby Erwin, Leo and Ginger McKenna, El and Joan Danforth, Ab and Cynthia Oakes to name some others. Ab will be coaching the Dartmouth hockey team this winter while Eddie Jeremiah takes the Olympic team. BertWhittemore drove up from Boston, Rick Worrell, Jon Strong, Roge and Sherrie Schumacher, Hank and Janet Taylor, and others enjoyed the Hanover reunion.

That morning Russ Brace presided over a class meeting in Hopkins Center. Wil Sogg arrived from Cleveland to give us the story of Wha Who Whisper, and Doug Keare discussed plans for the opening of the annual drive to raise funds for the Class of '56 foreign student scholarship.

Ab Oakes took over the duties of Class Treasurer replacing Jim Flynn, who has held the position since 1956. Jim did a great job getting class dues off to a good start two years ago; he initiated our class memorial books program and ALUMNI MAGAZINE subscription plan, was called upon for reunion financing, and did a skillful job with bookkeeping and obtaining maximum interest rate for class funds. Jim and Polly have recently moved from Long Island to Painted Post, N. Y., and Jim has taken a new job. They have a son, Doug, born May, 1961. Our class is indebted to Jim for his many hours of hard work in establishing our class as a solid part of the Dartmouth alumni and to Polly for her patience and for frequently opening their Garden City home for meetings and relaxation. Here's wishing them the very best in their new home, and all that lies ahead.
